I have put a (returnable) deposit on a second hand Wisper 905eco Electric Bike. It was bought in October 2010 and used regularly until August 2011. Since then not used and not charged.

The bike looks in overall good condition but battery condition is the deal maker or breaker. I am going to take it out on Saturday for an extended test ride.

I shall see how it copes with hills and what its endurance is.

Any other suggestions for how I can best get an accurate understanding of the condition of the battery?

That long break of about 4 months without charging may well have harmed the battery, three months is normally the outside limit without charging, and Wisper recommend at least once a month when not in use. However, much depends on how fully charged it was when it fell out of use, and the storage conditions since.

Your hill climbing and endurance test after a full charge is all that's necessary to check the condition. If it measures up to that, the battery will be ok and should give another year or more of use. Do fully charge it first before riding though, don't check it's performance while it's discharged.
