Test riding different ebikes.

Having just read Indalos thread 'Who wins in the real world' about comparing different ebikes from different manufacturers, it got me to thinking. Wouldn't it be great if ebikes were so popular that dealers existed who stocked a large range of bikes from different manufacturers.

When I was looking at motorbikes, I test rode a couple from dealers before deciding, as the only way to discover what's right for you is to ride a variety of bikes, (I also blagged a go on a couple of mates bikes.) Obviously, no multi manufacture ebike garage exists, but what I've noticed about this forum is the desire from members to help each other out wherever possible.

With that in mind, I would be more than happy for anyone looking into ebikes to have a go on mine. I realise there is a security issue, but surely any member/senior member isn't likely to make off with your pride and joy, and besides any test rider is surely going to come by car?

Those willing to offer their bikes for test rides could maybe put their bike make/model, and town location.

Maybe those willing to offer test rides to regular members could copy and paste to this list.
Those wanting to try a bike, p.m. the willing volunteers !

A great idea Blackpanther.

I will join such a scheme once I have bought a bike. I would take you up on the offer a ride on your Aurora which I have read so much about, just for the experience. However it is a long way. Also I am really looking for a step thru frame and the disc brake on the front would interfere with my measuring mechanism.

If I ever manage to get to grips with measuring rider power, I would offer a standard test route with known characteristics (ie gradients). If some others also did that then we might begin to build up some quantitative comparisons.

During the Spring perhaps, when its a bit warmer...

I want to get a bunch of some of the electric bikes suggested on here (the Best e-Bikes of 2010 would be a good place to start), get a bunch of people together and go out and review them. Really, thorough reviews.

Wouldn't it be great to have a whole bunch of really decent reviews all in one place? Then I was thinking of perhaps building a 'recommendation engine' for potential e-bike buyers off the back of it.

A good day out for a bunch of Pedelecs folks, potential buyers and some great exposure for the best e-bike brands.

Details coming soon...

I admire your willingness to help other people out,and i am sure 99.99% of people on here are genuine, but i would not want to risk lending my bike to any new member that seems interested,it could possibly be some scam artist that has just discovered the value of electric bikes or even the value of the batteries.

I suppose it would work better in an area like London where there are far more ebikers per square mile. There aren't many members of this Forum near Doncaster.....I feel all alone!:(

Our forum membership represents only a very small percentage of those who own e-bikes, so in any area there will be about 30 to 40 times as many as there are pedelecs members. Since only some members get themselves onto the map, there could be 50 or more e-bike riders for each forum member in your area.

Really? I've only every seen one other ebike around here. That's a chap who I sometimes pass as he's going from Rossington towards Doncaster in the evening.

I've also seen someone on one of those electric (15mph) scooters. Now I bet those are a right beast to pedal!

:). Yes really, see my answer here.

Also e-bikes sell at around 30,000 a year in the UK currently, but the pedelecs forum has only just over 4,000 members total after four and a half years, and many of those are from other countries.

So the ratio is about 1 to 30, but taking out the overseas members pushes that still further apart.

lets get it in perspective 30.000 is a drop in the ocean compared to our population

it is no wonder bikes are so few on the ground. I see more on holidays in Europe in one month then I do in 11 months here.......

Yes, The Netherlands buy around ten times the whole of UK e-bike sales, with only just over one third of the population, so again around a 30 to 1 ratio.

Never wanting to disagree with Flecc....

I think annual UK sales of reasonable quality (£800+) electric bikes is about 9,000 per year. 3 million UK bike sales in total.

1 in 7 bikes sold in Switzerland is electric. 1 in 12 in Germany....

You aren't disagreeing Bruce, just being very selective to greatly reduce the total of all e-bike sales. Over two years ago the UK sales were estimated at some 20,000 total, following A to B's research in the industry producing a figure of 14,000 which excluded the cheap utility end of the market. Since then there has undoubtedly been a large expansion in sales and the makes and models on offer. Including the cheap and utility ends of the market, with ebay sales and the like to the UK, 30,000 is a realistic total.
