Yesterday, while doing a bit of DIY I lunged at a piece of wood as it rolled off a window sill. As I did this, I felt a tight blow to my right calf. I knew right a way I had pulled or torn something. Luckily, I hobbled to a party last night with 5 physios in attendance. They checked me over and they think I have torn some muscle fibres in the calf (as opposed to the all out achilles snap:eek: ) They prescribed RICE.. Rest, Ice, something beginning with C and then exercise. But the bad news is no more cycling for at least a fortnight. It was also the second day of my annual holiday.. so I am not a happy bunny:mad:

About a week ago I had some persistent cramp in the calf but didn't think twice about it.
Has anyone else experienced torn calf muscles, and if so, what would you recommend?

Very sorry to hear this - you have my sympathy.

C stands for compression, but as that is the limit of my knowledge, I'd better say no more!

Sorry to hear this happened, and especially the bad timing. I have done similar with various muscles, the last time a shoulder muscle due to an ill-advised sudden movement, and the most effective treatment is always as you describe, initial rest but quite soon followed by gradually exercising the muscle back to fitness. Start with little more than mobility exercise, aerobic fashion to keep things loosened up, then gradually step up the amount of work on the muscle.

If you suffer muscle cramp in future, best to start giving it some daily aerobic exercise immediately to see if loosening up clears the problem. If it doesn't clear quickly, see the doctor since there can be other implications.

Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation

Ideally this should be done straight after the injury so the ice and compression won't really do much now Im afraid. Rest and elevation are the orders of the day!

Good luck

ELEVATION not EXERCISE of course! Good job I hadn't started my intensive Pilates workouts.
Thanks Frank.. I am still ice packing the calf as it seems to relieve the pain (+ garner sympathy and helps me sell the story that it was a sports injury.):)
