Having never ridden a Bosch , I was wondering how loud they are ?
compared to what ?.

seemed to be towards the quieter end of most of the bikes I tried but certainly not silent (but then again I have yet to find one that really is).

I agree with GaRRy its relatively quiet , in our case quieter than the Wisper and I think quieter than my older Emotion 24V. Panasonic

My hearing not that great (to much loud music) to me it's very quiet compared to my hub bike. Certainly quietest bike I have had.....I know you own some high end stuff so you may well find it a bit underwhelming...

Thanks guys , I do fancy something less power and more mountain bike.
Saw a ktm e lycan ( with hub )in a shop , looked very nice.
I find in winter need less power , and like the idea of a crank drive

my KTM Machina Race has finally been ordered from Austria, and it is the new 2013model, with 400ah battery instead of 2012 300ah...also has improved forks I believe, and the new Bosch HMI 'dashboard'

will write it up when arrived/de=boxed/and ridden........early Xmas present

a 400aH battery would weigh about 150kg and need a trailer towed behind the bike. Could you clarify what you mean?

The latest versions of the Bosch drive are marginally quieter than the Panasonic drive. As I understand it, The early Bosch drives had the reduction gear-train cut from hardened alloy. In the latest versions, one of these gears is now cut from composite material, possibly nylon.

I recently posted a video of a Bosch powered machine in the 'Sticky' section of this forum. When editing the video, I left the native audio from the cams in place. In the footage from the chest cam, If you use the 'clicks' of the gear-shifters as a reference for setting the volume level of your player, you will have a good idea of how quiet the system is.

When comparing noise levels of the various drive formats, we also have to take into consideration the position of the motor. Rear hub-motors will generally sound quieter than a front hub-drive.

d8ve....I knew I was walking on dodgy ice here, bandying stats like 300 or 400, but I am only repeating what my Austrian contact has written, and his English is only a bit better than my non existent German, (limited to achtung-achtung- shnell englander etc ), but the Bosch website does mention something about a 'better' battery, and so do the german pedelec folk...it is obviously wh and not ah!!

http://www.pedelec-biker.de/

Eddie.....with £ to eu at 1.23 the cost was £1960, + £70 shipping...

I still would have gone through my local bike shop if something would have been available, but there was no feedback, and no info on 'when' or even how much for new 2013 kit.....and if I am going to mail order in the UK, I may as well have better kit from Europe

Sorry, I was a bit abrupt. I knew about the 8aH and 11aH batteries, but I couldn't relate it to 300 and 400 of anything. I got it now thanks to Cakey. It must have been the late night I had last night. I'm losing it in my old age. It was my 60th yesterday.

I just bought an Ave XH-3, and the Bosch crank drive is wonderfully quiet. The only bikes I really have experience of are my old Juicy Sport 2010 (a hub drive of half the price), and I've done quick tests of a Kalkhoff Agattu C8 (another Bosch) and an Emotion Neo Cross (top-end hub drive).

Interestingly out of all of them, the Emotion was by far the noisiest - it sounds like a milk float! However, I like a bit of noise coming out of my motor, as it provides reassurance that it's working. So I'd have been perfectly happy with the Emotion, except I found the price a tad too high compared to the Ave.

The Bosch system on the Kalkhoff and my Ave is the quietest of the lot, but you can still hear it, especially on hills where this system really comes into its own. If noise is an important purchase factor for you, you'll be happy with a Bosch-powered bike.

Many happy returns of yesterday young man!

It will be decades before you lose it Dave, not to be confused with just being a bit tired. :)
