I rode to work on my Cannondale CX700 this morning in a single gear (4th) due to a problem with my gears which I need to look at lunchtime. My time for my 15 miles was 55:08. Avg. speed of 16.7 mph. I've looked at my cycle log at similar rides (same route, same wind direction and similar strength) and, yes, times are better with gears ranging between 50:10 (18.2 mph) and 52:27 (17.3 mph) - I think the reason that my time was so good was because I worked harder than I normally do. I was really sweating when I got to work. I suspect that I've been a bit lazy recently so this was a good wake up call ...also, because I have a motor I didn't think twice about doing it! ..if I can't fix my gears ...(my cassettle may need replacing) then I'll be quite happy to cycle home in 4th.
