Ahh ok, i was thinking like a car clutch ie disengagement etc. Is there a hub system that has no drag at all so you can choose to engage it or disengage it?
I don't believe so....

The old Powabyke motor had the ring gear freewheeled to the hub shell with pawls like those in a bike's rear freewheel. That truly had no drag and needed no other clutch/freewheel, but the ticking of the pawls could be heard.

Now that the newest Suzhou Bafang motors have a much thicker ring gear they could make that in steel and slightly enlarge the hub shell incorporating pawls for the same benefit. It would still be quiet with the nylon planet gears, though it would cost a lot more. The ring gear would not be strong enough to take the point loadings of a silent roller and ramp type freewheel though.

When we were out on this ride we came to a hill with a down slope of about 1km. We stopped the bikes and we freewheeled all the way down. The electric bike won over the racer by about a metre and the bike had it`s power turned off.

I have just ordered some smoother road tyes as I do not need mountain bike tyres where I ride. I am hoping that increases the rolling and also get rid of that whiney noise that nobbly tyres make on tarmac.

Galileo will be turning in his grave!

As he demonstrated from the Pisa tower, weight makes no difference to speed-of-fall due to gravity.

There was a very long thread about this back in about 2007.

Who is this Galileo gezzer...I tried sending him a PM to tell him what a plonker he is, but he does not appear to be on the members list:confused: Has he left us?:p

No, he didn't get a chance to join, the Pope duffed him up years ago, he didn't like Galileo's ideas either.

Perhaps pedantically, Galileo possibly persisted with pleas to a pathetic passing public to please possess the possibility of equal-time passing for plunges earthwards, perhaps pronouncing "Accept my phindings you phlat-earther philistines!"

Thanks Lynda, I stand corrected, too many powered types out there!

Raises the question, which is best, powering the whole bicycle or just the pedals! ;)

Yes, well, I for one am watching Stephen Britt's invention with interest :)
