Transx PST transmission not working or is it me??

I have a brand new Ave electric cycle with TransX PST front-drive crank-sensing motor system having previously used a bike with a handlebar throttle.

I am finding 2 things. Firstly, I am having to reset the system quite frequently. For example on my first serious trip out, of some 7 miles including some hills, I had to reset the thing 3 times before it worked, and on one occasion was reduced to walking up part of a hill! Reset 4 then got it going and it went fine.

Secondly, on steady pedaling the system seems to go off and on. This may be due to me getting used to this method of transmission.

Before I go back to the dealer, a 120 mile round trip by car, does anyone have any advice they can give me. The cycle has only done some 18 miles from new and the battery is full charged.

Thanks for any help you can give.

The going on and off at constant speed is probably the speed limit if it happens round about 15mph.

Your other problem is more unusual. You say that you had to reset it, but what does that mean? Why? Did it conk out? If so, was it conkinking out on the hills, the flat bits or on bumps - on max power only or on any level.?

Thank you for your quick reply. Firstly, so far as I can recall, the speed limit of 15 mph was not being reached.

When the machine stopped responding to pedal pressure after only a few miles, I looked at the manual and the only troubleshooting advice was if the 'motor support and pedalling are not in perfect synergy' the advice was to press a button on the cycle computer with the wheels standing in a straight line to reset the system and, lo and behold, it worked! And the bike was great. The problem was that it did not stay working. Even on my shortish trip I felt like throwing the machine in the ditch!
The reason why I use a pedelec is because I do not have 100% lung capacity and need help up hills. My previous bike, built and feeling like a tank, took hills with ease even with only 3 gears and a 4 yr old 27 volt motor.

If stuck you could ring EBCO to see if they have a tip from their knowledge. Some of their own EBCO models use the TranzX system and they are agents for some AVE models, though not your particular one. Here's the contact page with their phone number:

The TranzX system calibration 1 should be done after adjusting or removing the rear wheel, after replacing the display or after transporting the bike. However you should not need to do this during a journey (i.e. on a cycle trip). We have sold several bikes with this system e.g. Ebco Eagle and this is not how it should function.

I would contact the dealer, was this us or someone else? If it was us please give us a call. We provide a full after care service if you buy a bike from us regardless of your location. Hope you get the bike sorted because it is an excellent bike when working but it can be very frustrating when you get an intermittant fault.

Richard is the tehnical person at EBC and is always very helpful.

Thanks everyone for your help. The bike goes back to the dealer next week for checking.

I have just done, with some small difficulty, a short journey with a small amount of simple climbing. No real hills. I think I have now been able to analyse what is happening. The system does work now BUT, and this is a big BUT, the delivery of the power is not consistent throughout the range.

Essentially, it cuts in as it should do but sporatically fades. When it fades I am left pedaling on my own regardless of the terrain. With my lung function this causes problems as I am sure that you will appreciate. This is why I have an electric bike!
I would have thought that delivery of assistance would have continued throughout as the assistance was set at a 'high' level on the computer. It almost as though the system delivers a boost to get up speed and then says 'right, I have got you there; you are now on your own'
Do you see what I mean?

Regards and, again, many thanks for all your advice.

We have sold several of these and they are very good bikes. Hope you get it sorted soon. The bike has a torque sensor (TMM4) like the Ebco Eagle which senses how much you effort you put in. Normally when there is a problem a fault code appears on the screen. Sold a lot of the Eagles as well and have found this system to be reliable.

To be quite honest, mechanically this is a lovely machine, apart from the 'problem'. It is smooth to ride, there seems to be no drag from the wheels or the bearings and I was really surprised as the bike coasted down the slightest slope with no assistance for quite a distance. Reminded me of the cycles on the polders in Holland; superb engineering.

Finding my (electric) wheels
Hi Burlington,

You need to check the calibration of the torque TMM4 sensor. To do this you need to:

Put bike in top gear with wheels in line on flat ground
Switch on power
Put pedals in horizontal position
Hang a 10kg weight on the right pedal while holding the bike from rolling forward
Hold down the mode & light buttons for at least 5 seconds

The display will show CAL 2 and a number.

This should be between 45 & 90 (ignore the size of the numbers)

If it is outside this range (it's probably a lot higher) the TMM4 sensor needs adjusting.

EBCO could tell you this & so could your supplier!

Give me a call on 07946 70 22 66 if I can help you further.

Tony

If you are not sure what to use for a 10kg weight. A sealed lead acid battery like you find on mobility scooters are often 10kg, they also have a handle so you can hang them from the pedal. Process is easy normally finding 10kg weight is the hard part for customers ;)
