Hi.....I have a camper van and a Wisper bike:
I would like to avoid fitting a cycle rack but getting the bike into the van is a real struggle.
Can I loosen the bolt in the centre of the handlebar post and turn the bars parallel to the frame ?

It'd go in easy then.

Only if it's the old type headstock Mike. If it's this newer type of headstock shown below, loosen only the two allen bolts numbered 1 and the bars will rotate then:

No ...it's not that one Flecc...it's a one piece quill type post.

Is that a yes I can do it or no I can't ?

cheers....Mike

Yes you can Mike, assuming it's got a double nut at the top of the headstock for bearing adjustment. Just slacken the centre bolt a turn or two, give it a sharp tap to release the cone at the bottom and the bars and stem will turn.

There's a third type of headstock I'm not familiar with that doesn't have the double nut and I can't say with that.

Mike, not sure how old your wisper is but if a recent model be very careful doing this! As you dont want to tear cables out of connection box...it is easy to do.

hope Mike does not mind me hi jacking this thread with a question of my own...

Trying to lift the handlebar on a 705. (the arrangement is the same as in Flecc's photo) I assumed all I had to do was loosen the Allen nut not numbered in picture..the one on the right with markings around side? I loosened it right of and bar would not budge...any ideas please?

I am using this bike till new one arrives and find I get shoulder ache because of riding position

Underneath the stem riser, not shown on the photo, is another allen bolt, this must be slackened as well as the one you have already done. The one underneath should be tightened first, after making sure the new position is sitting in one of the locating groves, You will understand this when you look.

Cheers Eddy....I think you're right.
...I may have to take this problem back to the drawing board.
....think about a bike rack.

Mike,

Have you tried lifting the release handle and loosening the bolt on the top of the stem with an allen key? That should do it - I'll check on my Wisper later today.

I have a very small camper (Romahome). It has a very small rear door. I "post" my bike in rear wheel first, turning the handlebars as necessary. Hope this helps.

Hi Colin...thanks but I don't think I have a release handle :

Mine is a fixed quill type stem...perhaps you have something different.

Cheers Colin...that's the one, except mine has a cone type nut.
...I've decided however to drop out the front wheel and try that next time
...easier and quicker.

thanks all....Mike
