welding needed for broken back axle

I have a Matra i-step city electric bike purchased in France (with spares only available in France).

The axle on the rear wheel (where the motor is attached) has snapped, its inside the middle part of the wheel and attached to the electrics that drive the motor. I have a wheel with working motor that is useless.

I need to repair the wheel - weld it probably and maybe reconnect the electrics.

Does anyone know anyone who would undertake such a job? I am in Surrey.

Best to look up yellow pages or google local welders in your area.
Most car body shops have welding equipment but you'll first need to check if the broken part is alloy or steel as not all welders repair alloy.

Not an easy one, you have to ask yourself why it broke. The axle/spindle in my opinion will need replacing because even if it was welded it would then have to be turned to get it true and there would always be a week point.

the broken part seems solid in the middle of the wheel connected to the engine - I'm not sure it can be got out!

Is this your machine.

If it is, then it is powered by the Canadian made BionX system. Attempting to weld the axle isn't really feasible, even if you managed to find a new axle, you would still need a very competent person to rebuild the motor. It might be best to contact the BionX retailer here in Britain.

Don't be surprised if you have to buy a complete new motor, and it won't be cheap.

Sounds like it's twisted itself into destruction mode, I suspect the spindle is made out of crap material also. Can you post any photo's.
Usually most things can be fixed. Without seeing it it's hard to judge what might be required. It might be possible to get someone with a lathe to 'turn' a new spindle? (assuming the remnants of the original can be retrieved).

I'm not so sure about this Blew it. Although Matra do fit BionX to some models, the motor casings on this Runner model and the City model inquired about are quite different from the BionX motor casing.

Matra also bought the Tidal Force bike rights and use that motor too, so they may be using a Tidal Force type motor with a BionX styled battery casing.

Yes, I see what you mean. It appears to be a rather strange mix 'n' match system

Hi Jezgw,

I can do TIG welding of both alloys and steel and I'm not far from Surrey but TBH from welding experience welding the axles may not be the best idea due to various issues such:

1. strength after welding (axles carry all the load)
2. Linear geometry of this axle. Sadly welding normally bends the metals unless you use proper tooling that holds it.

If you are not far from Kingston/ Richmond I could at least have a look at the problem and advise you what's best to sort it out. Maybe it would be easier to get the axle machined... still won't say too much till could see the problem

kind regards

Andrew
