Whereabouts are you, Steve? I only ask as most of the bike suppliers will let you have a test ride, which I know is a bit late, but might help you decide what to do next. There IS a market for Salisbury-type bikes, amongst younger/fitter/lighter riders, so you should be able to offload it, if that's what you decide.
My position was this: after boring the good people here rigid for a month with my questions, I only test rode two types: the Kalkhoff and the Wisper, as the answers I received talked me out of my original preference for the cheaper end bikes (I'm not young, not fit, and not light).
Anyway, once you've found one that suits you, it might be a question of being patient and waiting for a good second-hand bike to pop up. Oldtimer (above) is, I believe, a fairly big bloke, and rides sub-£1000 bikes, so hopefully he'll have some useful pointers for you.
