Hi All,

Apologies for the question as I'm keen to electrify my bike but utterly ignorant as to the technical aspects: I have a chance to buy, at a very good price, a Wisper 806 26V 9AH battery. My question is, would I be able to wire this up to a DIY rigout rather than a Wisper bike? I'd probably get a Bafang 250W motor to match it if so.

The seller won't hold the battery for long so if anyone could advise me today I'd be really grateful!

Many thanks,

Rendel

Hi Rendel, I'm no expert when it comes to DIY stuff but I can't see any reason why it shouldn't work but couple of things to consider..you might need a Wisper charger to charge it.. also how do you know the battery is in good condition? If it's been used it may be degraded and not perform very well.. there are new LifePo4 batteries cheap on eBay from China for around £160-£190 (delivered) which some members have reported to be good value for money you might want to consider for a DIY project. I'm doing a DIY conversion myself in the next few weeks and will be getting one of these batteries myself. The advantage of these batteries also is that the seller will do any size and format you want, so it's handy if you have specific weight or mounting requirements...Here is the link:

Also there are complete kits with a battery. Check kit price alone and kit with battery to help you judge the value- it may help lower kit price, and carriage costs would probably be offset and lower than if just comparing the two batteries side by side. I think the charger price might be higher than you expect so don't forget to include that.

Thanks for the advice guys - turns out having told me he'd wait for my decision until 5PM this evening the seller offloaded it this morning! But many thanks for your help and advice.

I don't know what your budget is but don't buy cheap battery! If the battery is week then it will lead to disappointment and extra expense down the line. Alien make some good kits with very good batteries integrated into a rear rack. Maybe out of your budget but they are worth saving for....

Hi Rendel

I would be very cautious and would ask the following questions;

How old is the battery?

Why are they selling it?

Does it have a charger with it.

Where did it come from?

If they say from the 805fe, ask for the frame number and I will check it out for you.

We have not sold bikes with these 24V Panasonic batteries for over a year and unless the bike has been regularly used or the battery has been topped up every 3 months the power may well have dropped.

Before you spend your money get a friendly electrician to check out the voltage when full charged.

Also if the seller does not have a charger I would be very suspicious as to the origin of the battery.

Good luck

Thanks David,

Pretty sure he was kosher, he had bought a spare battery to increase range but never used it, he had a receipt and said it had been properly topped up. I've suffered enough at the hands of bike theives to make sure I never buy anything that looks a bit warm! Irrelevant now anyway as it was sold, but thanks for your trouble in replying and offer of help.

Best,

Rendel

Great news, sorry to sound a bit patronising, but whenever I see a bike or battery being sold (ebay on especially) alarm bells start to ring.

All the best

David
