  1. I Never heard of a rivnut before. Unhappy about drilling into the fancy frame before trying...wait for it...1 bolt into existing hole and using some incredibly tacky caravan mastic left over from fitting new window vents. It goes harder on exposure to air..probably not much good in the Sahara though! I discovered that the Trance frame is sort of rounded triangular on the downtube so some packing with mastic is necessary. On a totally different note (are you allowed this?) The Bafung E-CST-R-350 motor has 3 power and 6 sensor wires. there is a white one that is not mentioned in the wiring diags. Any ideas?
  2. I just received a parcel from E Life Bike Co.China. In it is a Bafang rear hub motor and theController/throttle. I added 2 large battery/controller plastic boxes which would fit a tubular frame using the bottle carrier screws. I wonder if Chinese bikes have these bottle bosses further apart than ALL my 11 bikes as the boxes I got had fittings 13-14cms apart.Has anyone drilled and threaded an extra hole in their expensive alloy frame? Mine is a Full Suspension Trance one. Is it okay to hide away the alloy cased controller in a sealed plastic box. Would it get too hot perhaps? Also my Giant Frame has big, non circular downframe...more triangular. Anyone found a good, secure way to attach the bog standard controller case...a perforated strip at each end onto such a frame.Cable ties are all well and good but easily cut.I want it to look reasonable too. PS. I would have bought the kit in the UK, really! but I was unable to source the Bafang rear hub with cassette fitting at the normal dropout width. It means I can keep my 9 speed rear cluster, chain and gear shifters which goes some way towards the extra cost of the unit. I intend to try carrying the LiPol 36v carrier mounted battery I already had, in a small rucksack and use a flymo type cable connector. With cable on either side well secured to frame or rucksack. My memory of those orange rubber plug and sockets is that they came apart easily, but not too easily!
  3. Interesting as I may be electrifying my only hydraulic braked MTB.You could have used a cheap chinese thottle with a built in cut out switch. I nearly added one to a rear hub kit (bafang 350W Cassette model) but wanted to keep the considerable air freight charge down! Several dealers have said many riders do not bother with the braked swtch...just make sure the throttle is off when you brake. One less thing to go wrong!
  4. Hi Kevin, I bought one of the first Euro Powerbykes in 2000.At that time the controller was a separate box on the handlebars with a red push button to change between 'must pedal all the time' (Euro rules!) and a nicer 'will go anytime' The pedal or crank sensor is to give the motor an easier life by not allowing power to reach it until the bike is doing some 2-3mph.It does mean that you are stuck with using old cup and cone BB as there is a circular magnet glued to the inside bottom of the BB frame. So sealed BB is out unless you ignore the sensor and just make sure you are moving.I am on my third set of batteries in 15 years at around £67 from Ebay. My battery box was all soldered within but later models had push on fittings which make changing batteries easier.Since I use mine on local trails the battery box was well padded with bits from a thin camping mat..the original was cardboard! The tyres certainly last... over 7K and with all that weight too. Have fun on yours.
  5. Hello everyone! I joined to see how other members get to electrify their bikes and to hear comments on new ones. Since a replacement knee 18 months ago I have had to shorten cranks on 3 bikes and heighten the saddle on all of them.I have had a very reliable Euro Powerbyke since they first came out in 2000.I got a kit for my wife's bike from the US later since there was not much available in the UK at the time. This had a non geared front hub that ran fast on moderate inclines but laboured on the hills around Inverness. Now I have ordered a rear hub Bafang geared motor which takes cassette gears and a brake disc to use on a full suspension Giant. I will carry the LiPol battery in a rucksack using an easily detachable plug and socket in the power line.No room on the frame anywhere! I had, reluctantly, to order it from China as a big internet search in the uk revealed nothing. So far some £267 with a duty/VAT bill to come.At least I know it made it to the UK and is now travelling to the Highlands with Parcel Force.I'll let you know how I get on.
