The problem with those is going to be getting parts when they go wrong, which they will. Also I would take the 40 mile range with a pinch of salt, similar scooters we have sold in the past would just about do 25 maybe 30 miles if you're really lucky (and weigh next to nothing). That's when the batteries are new. Within 2 years (at most) of regular use the batteries will probably only get you 10 miles max.

Couldn't agree more! I do feel that it is not really appropriate to continue this discussion in public now, but will attempt to resolve this situation directly with the customer.

Andrew - I've checked the details of your case and I cannot find any errors in my post.

In our defence... Firstly, I would like to point out that (Andy) "Andyofthesouth" had a different motor in his earlier version of the kit. His kit was initally fitted by us and unfortunately despite a proper fitment it turned out that his front forks were too weak to deal with the torq and consequently broke. This was not due to incorrect fitment. "Andy" then moved the kit onto a new bike but there were evidently electrical and mechanical problems all due to to incorrect fitment... We refitted his kit free of charge... At this point the wiring had all been interfered with and we had to spend hours putting new controller pigtail connectors as every one of them had been hacked off... His kit was subsequently properly fitted with all the correct torque washers etc and fully tested and 100% working. "Andy" then took the machine to another bike shop and asked them to provide a statement citing incompetent workmanship and a poor quality product. Said bike shop did not agree, refused to write a statement, and made a point of getting in touch with us to let us know what had happened. Next - I have replied to Doug by email, but as he has decided to pursue this in public, here is our reply so those that wish to may judge for themselves: 1) There is a cruise function in the controller. If you hold the throttle fully open for 8 secs it will keep going until the throttle is blipped again. This is normal. 2) We believe the motor you received was one of several with the incorrect markings on the casing. However if you prefer, we are willing to replace the motor with one that is correctly marked as they should shortly be available. 3) The motor should not destroy its cabling if fitted correctly. The Torque washer, which I know was supplied with your kit, should stop the axle rotating. However this quote from your last email causes me concern: "Unfortunately to stop the centre of the hub (with wire entry) from moving you must tighten the nuts so hard that there is no freewheel. Is this a design fault?. " And suggests that the wheel nuts have not been adequately tightened. Using the correct washers in the right combination is critical, to provide torque resistance for the axle as well as allowing freewheeling of the hub - both are essential for a proper fitment. For these reasons we usually prefer to fit the conversions in-house. We are very keen to resolve this and find out why you are having a problem. We can either help you to correct the fitment by checking/advising on what you have done so far, or if you wish to get the entire bike to us we will correctly fit the kit for you and return it. It sounds like the washers were not fitted correctly around the motor into the forks. This is necessary to ensure non-rotation of the axle and freewheeling of the hub. If there is any rubbing of the motor in the forks then there is going to be a problem sooner rather than later. If the Torque washers are not in place then the axle will rotate. I believe the instructions do show the correct the fitment of the motor, and indeed the motor in this case was fitted in a set of Brompton forks to the customer, so that there would not be any confusion about how the motor should be fitted..... In any case we are not wishing to leave any of our customers high and dry and will do whatever we reasonably can to resolve the situation.

I agree electric / electronic skills are thin on the ground in most cycle shops. We have learned a lot, mainly by trial and error. Our shops are pretty good at sorting out the majority of electrical gremlins. Batteries are the biggest variable factor in the business. If we are not sure about a new technology, we tend to do our own objective testing before putting something on the market. A battery that should perform well (in theory/on paper) must prove itself. Some things about a bike take time to discover, such as longevity of batteries and build quality. For these kind of issues, we rely largely on the backup support of the supplier. All of our suppliers give us good back up support on the whole. If they don't then we can't in turn give good customer support. This usually leads us to dropping the supplier concerned, such has been the story with Urban Mover and Ecobike.

Just a thought, the powacycle salisbury is a truely superb machine for the money. It has a third less power than the wisper but it does do its job well, and the Salisbury is much under-rated for its low weight and very low motor drag. Give it (and other contenders) a spin at one of the shops.

Please note that that Eddieo is having his wheel rebuilt by a local specialist firm that we use. The result will be a considerably strengthened wheel. Wisper have been brilliant to us and our customers - they genuinely want everyone to be absolutely delighted with what are for the most part, extremely impressive performing electric bikes. Spoke / wheel build problems are now relatively rare on Wisper bikes - we sell more 905SEs than any other dealer, and they are currently the best performing and best selling high-end ebike in our range.

Wisper would suit you Hi I think the Wisper would suit you best. We stock the Ezees as well as the Wispers (best selection of these is in our Oxford shop actually). I would urge you to go along and take a nice long trial on the Wispers and Ezees. The Ezee feels solidly built but the Wisper outperforms and my feeling is that the lightweight and nimble handling of the Wisper will provide better performance, component durability, and ride quality. It's a bit of a winning formula. The Kalkhoff, in my opinion, lacks the excitement of the other bikes and doesn't give you the twist and go throttle option (if that is an issue).

I suspect that the reset trip is just over-sensitive. Especially if this is happening under a heavy load eg. hill climbing. I would suggest opening up the trip mechanism and bypassing it with a fuse in its place. 25A fuse would probably be suitable. We can check it out / sort this for you if you are near us.

These batteries are a bit flakey we've had quite a few problems with them for one reason or another, and have therefore decided to stop selling the Lynx and Puma. Jamie, TETS.BIZ

I've been to the launch and it is indeed a 36v version of the Tongxin motor. It is friction drive, a very nice design indeed. We're taking preorders now at £995 (a nice incentive!) and we should have a demo/sample which we will rotate around the shops as required. Jamie - TETS.Biz
