derestricting

Featured Replies

some manufacturers advertise that their bikes/kits can easily be derestricted.

obviously this would only be done for off road use , but is it just as easy to restrict them again for the road journey home?

am i right in saying that some are done by simply altering the settings on the lcd display?

does anybody have any info on which bikes/ kits we are talking about and any useful data as to what to expect when derestricted .i.e. speed ,increase/ decrease of climbing ability and reduction of mileage range?

thanks

Changing the speed limit doesn't affect the climbing ability. Many of the cheaper bikes had/have a loop of wire that you disconnect at the controller. Normally, you have to undo some screws to access the controller, so about five minutes to convert. Ezee bikes are like that. Many of the recent bikes now have LCDs where you can change the speed limit with simple settings. About 1 minute to convert. When derestricted the speed of the bike depends on the motor speed. Most bikes will go up to somewhere between 17 and 20 mph.

The European bikes with Panasonic, Kalkhoff and Bosch motors have software that controls power and speed, which can be changed if you have access to the programming device or if you have advanced hacking skills. Some dealers will let you borrow that device if you ask them nicely,ut many won't. Ask before you buy the bike. When derestricted, you get a lot of extra speed from the crank-drive oones

thanks for the reply

which ones can be done in about a minute with the LCD?

thanks

All the Chinese bikes with LCD can easily be derestricted by this method.

The maximum speed you can get to depends on the motor and battery (bigger = faster). Crank drives are also slightly faster.

The S series controllers with LCD display, from BMS battery can be de-restricted from the LCD.

The KU 65 uses a wire. I presume this is the same for the whole of the K series.

Not via the LCD & after the wiring has been installed but the Bosch motored bikes can be changed by plugging in or removing a dongle - takes about a second.

Some batteries may not support this. Chances are your lifting the current too 15a and your cells were chosen with 10a in mind. The bms could be sat right on the cells cooking away to meet the 50% increase in demand, making it worse still.

I have not seen a bottle battery that could meet the demand, and only one seat post battery. Rear rack mounted batteries are a better bet, but you will need to check.

If you just unlock with no regard for the battery, it might limit it's life severely.

BH are now fitting an S pedelec mode to some of the NEO range. Not sure if the UK market is included in that though.

Not wishing to teach Granny to suck eggs, but are you sure you need top speed derestricted offroad?

My experience is that I want huge amounts of low-speed torque on the Interesting bits, but rarely have time to get into high gears on a descent before needing grunt for the next section:

Gravity works a treat for me :)

BTW: You do realise a derestricted bike's just as illegal offroad as on - unless it's on enclosed private land?

You're right with regard to crank-motors, but not with hub-motors. By the time they go past 15mph or 2/3 maximum speed, the back emf is so large that the current drops off rapidly.

you still have to rev up, the 10ah battery will still be heavily stressed when the motor speeds up and over its maximum current.

That's the ticket. I didn't say a word about the speed limit as it is the current limit that is important for battery choice.

I thought we were talking about how to derestrict the speed limit?

thanks for all the replies

new to all this so forgive my ignorance on some of the technical info.

the burish model advertises a derestricting device for off road , is this the dongle device mentioned by wanderer?

i do have access to off road private land where i could get the use out of the extra performance but not at the expense of damage to anything.

you are spot on jackhandy about not needing speed on technical off road bits and if thats all i did off road i would totally agree with you and be looking at low speed torque.

the ability to travel legally to my location and then easily reset the performance is what i would be interested in.

if this is too expensive or difficult then i would rather stick to staying on the legal side for every thing .

anyone reading my recent threads will notice that i have an alien kit recently fitted to my bike and on reading on this forum it appears that there is better stuff available .[ not that i,m dissatisfied with my alien kit]

i am trying to convince my employer to take up the cycle to work scheme so i can get a complete bike eventually and naturaly want one as versatile as possible as it will be my only one.

thanks

I have a Panasonic ktm and haven't been able to find any info on this which is disappointing. I can use this thing off road so not being able to De-restrict is annoying. Maybe someone hugely more cleverer than me will work it out....

As for being illegal, so is driving a car over 30 in a 30 etc but hey everyone does it!
