First time post so thought I might use it to give some information rather than ask...

 

Just a quick review!

 

I'm by no means a cycling expert, in my 30's and go to the gym 5 days a week so I'm average age and fitness. I was looking for something I could either connect a trail gator or seat to for my son and not get tired on longer journeys. So after looking around at the different setups I finally settled for a bike with a hub motor and throttle, the Neo Xtrem! (The US Version)

 

I was looking for a particular look and setup and it's one of the few that has everything I like, Powerful, quiet, looks and throttle, then I found it's not easy to de-restrict (Yes I'm one of those ones!) never mind importing.

 

So anyway I then found out about the new Oxygen MTB off of D8veh and looked into that, it's basically ticked all the boxes I'm looking for so went for it.

 

This is the machine in question...

Throttle is on the right and a bit of a stretch unless you have a weird long thumb!

When it arrived it took less than 10 mins to fit the front wheel, battery and handlebars although there was a screw that needed tightened to allow the battery to slot on correctly but otherwise all looked good.

 

Before I even went out on it I de-restricted it (throttle as well) then tried it without any assist switched on just to get a feel of how it is as a bike.

 

It's as I expected, just like a normal mountain bike which when going up a hill can feel the extra weight slightly, the brakes are really good though, maybe even to good, the gears go up and down smoothly and seems well weighted. The suspension can be adjusted and locked, I'm still playing about with it but each persons opinion will be different on that. The only downside so far has got to be the seat, It's basically some kind of sex toy that's been stuck on a bike....

It looks good though! I replaced this with a not so good looking but comfy one.

 

THE POWER!!

So I did what most of us would secretly do and stuck it on full power at lever 6 and went for a ride up a hill, it is totally crazy!!! It just keeps accelerating up, I actually find myself thinking how to get to a place via the big hill.

 

When not on hills that power is just to high and you go to fast, even when your just turning the wheel it goes, so I usually keep it on power at level 1 or 2.

 

I seem to have 2 cruise speeds, my lazy slow one about 12 mph and my other around 18 mph, I'm happy it's de-restricted as it can help me if needed whereas some other bikes can't or cost extra to do.

 

One other note is when assist is on it almost makes the gears useless, I spend 90% of my time in top gear, I take off in it and go up hills in it, only once did I come down a couple for a wall, I think it was a wall it went up!

 

I tried the throttle and it's as expected, it took me to 14 mph up a slight incline which is not to bad, I actually haven't had the need to use it much cause you don't get tired at all.

 

I'm still to see the range I get as I've maybe only done 10 miles of which tbh the bike has done lots of and it's down to the 3rd LED of 4

 

Overall I'm really happy with this bike, it's cheaper than the ones I was looking at and looks good.

Hi Craig welcome to the forum.

Please up date the review when you have had the bike some time.

It's also a good idea not to mention derestricting.

It could make you traceable.

Wow, I never even realised Oxygen had changed the style of their bikes.

Wasn't really that keen on the behind the seatpost battery.

They look uber cool now :)

I told you that they'd be good. I first noticed them on the banner at the top of the page way back in February, which subsequently disappeared, then I saw a prototype at Shanghai in May.

 

For people that don't want so much power, there's a much cheaper version with cable disc brakes and the smaller Bafang CST motor. That's the first OEM bike I've seen with that motor.

The bike now features on the Oxygen website.

 

Not the best-designed site I've seen, but it does appear Oxygen is slowly getting its act together.

 

The product looks good, if they can match that with good marketing, they could do well.

I have the White E-mate; not so sexy but nearly as powerful and the bigger battery gives me easily 50 miles range at level 2-3 (out of 5)

It was the range that sold it to me, as I like to cycle for 2-3 hours in the countryside close to my home. I can 100% recommend the Oxygen bikes for build quality, and the importers, SYEB are a very friendly and helpful lot. I find that the E-mate with it's main battery operated lights, good carrier for panniers and decent mud guards makes commuting very comfortable. I would strongly recommend upgrading to reinforced tyres (Shwalbe city-jets in this case) and slime tubes; I had a "tyre off" blow out on the back and carrying a 24kg e-bike 3 miles to the nearest bike shop is not my idea of fun.

I too found out about the new Oxygen MTB by reading the very informed posts of D8ve. Took the plunge last week and ordered one for delivery next week. Craig's engaging review is the first of any sort I have found on the Oxygen MTB and has put my mind at rest re my decision.

 

Hopefully I'll be back with my 'review' soon. I'm also an inexpert cyclist but a keen technologist.

Just a quick update and photo...

 

Haven't been out to much over the winter as I generally ride as the pic attached shows and my 4 year old would probably freeze to death :)

 

But the bike still performs great, I can take him on 15 mile trips easily and wearing the most inappropriate cycling gear, not bra and pants, jeans and heavy jumper etc. I usually keep it on max power setting and use the throttle loads. Battery holds out great considering the weight of me, him and the chair. Maybe have 70% battery afterwards.

 

The funniest thing has to be the cycle paths, overtaking the guys all kitted up bent over sweating away.

While I casually pass by talking to my kid :)
