November 3, 20178 yr I have a Whyte shimano steps e-bike which is great but it's a flat bar. I want to convert my rather nice Titanium touring bike to an e-bike. Most of the time I just need help up the hills and on leaving the pub (when knees never work). What front motor kit should I consider buying and who from? Also 15.5 mph is a bit slow is it possible to go faster other than by pedalling?
November 3, 20178 yr Author I assumed it would be light weight, cheap and do the job. But I am happy to be educated.
November 3, 20178 yr A back motor is better, but you have to get the right type to go with the type of gears you have.
November 4, 20178 yr Youcassette motors have the Shimano type splines, so you'd have to change your cassette too. Cassette motors are Q100C, Q128C, Bafang SWX02C, MXUS XF08C plus various clones and derivatives. Many suppliers don't mention which motor is in their kit, so search for "ebike kit cassette motor".
November 4, 20178 yr Author I don't think 10 speed shimano spacing is compatible with campagnolo 10 speed. 11 speed is but the cost to change would be silly. It's one of the reasons I originally chose a front hub motor. Can we revert back to the original question please?
November 4, 20178 yr How far do you plan to ride on the touring bike, ideally you will want to keep the bike as light as possible ? Your weight will have a bearing on the hub to use and the hills to climb. Edited November 4, 20178 yr by Nealh
November 4, 20178 yr Author My days of doing 130 miles a day are long over and my wife doesn't like doing more than 70. I think the most we are likely to do is 60 miles. We tend to hotel now rather than camp so it keeps the weight down and we get electricity at the end of each day. 20 or 30 before lunch, then lunch, and another 20 or 30 after lunch is a great way to travel. Easy on the bum too.
November 4, 20178 yr You haven't mentioned weight !!! If you are sub 85kg then a Q100H 260rpm hub is approx. 2 - 2.2kg and can materialise 19 mph @36v. At 48v 23/24 mph is about the mark so over volting is an option, though you need a nice kt controlle. A kt lcd enables you to make small setting changes.
November 4, 20178 yr Author No, I am 100kgs but my wife is planning to starve me. Edited November 4, 20178 yr by infopete
November 6, 20178 yr Author would this be good or can I do better? http://dillengerelectricbikes.co.uk/electric-bike-kits/best-sellers/street-legal-electric-bike-kit-samsung-power-13ah-by-dillenger.html
November 6, 20178 yr Shengyi DGW 07 is a140mm hub so probably similar to 8FUN/Bafang SWX 02 probably a clone. I doubt if many or any have much experience with this brand. For 100kg then a torquey motor is a bpm for the front or a SWX 02, ideally a rpm wind of 201 -- 270rpm.

November 6, 20178 yr Author Guys, I am trying to give up crashing on my bike. Recovery time is some sort of square rule related to age. as for "rpm wind of 201 -- 270rpm" that would ruin my hair!

November 6, 20178 yr Author any advice on the Dillinger kit? Or do you all buy individual components?
November 6, 20178 yr any advice on the Dillinger kit? Yes, you buy and fit one then tell us what you think of it !!!
November 7, 20178 yr Author Yes, you buy and fit one then tell us what you think of it !!! I thought you guys were experts and here to impart your knowledge?
November 7, 20178 yr I thought you guys were experts and here to impart your knowledge? None of us make that claim, we just input our knowledge on all subjects asked. We can't afford or even try every bit of kit out there, though as an accumulative group many chip in with kits bought and tried off the cuff and impart their knowledge gained through trial and error. Sometimes it also requires others to bite the bullet and then give us feed back.
November 7, 20178 yr Would something like this be any good? I am looking for something to convert my steel tourer & have been keeping my eyes on the kit, especially at a reduced price. https://comingsoon-tech.com/swytch-electric-bike-wheel/ Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk

As mentioned previously it requires some one to bit the bullet to try it out and give valuable feed back. Claims of 20% hill climbing (1 in 5) is very impressive, it will need to live up to that to be considered a very good kit. The introductory guinea pig price will be the only way to get it cheaper unless of course it turns out to be a stinker then they will be giving them away.

It gives surprising torque for its size and it's very light. I tested one a few moths back in my lightweight build thread. It works perfectly, but has a couple of shortcomings compared with other kits. The motor doesn't freewheel as well as other geared motors and there's a one second delay to get power from the PAS or throttle. Neither of those is a deal breaker. The controller is only 11A, so 30% less overall power than average. I can't say that the Swytch kit is exactly the same as mine, though likely. I would say that it's a good kit for folding bikes, but on a full-size one, a rear Q100 kit would be better if you want light weight.
