August 20, 20196 yr Hi All This is my first build and it’s all going swimmingly apart from the fact I don’t get any pedal assist! Stupidly I didn’t connect everything together before bolting to the bike but c’est la vie. I’ve got power to the display and have configured it with max assist level, walk mode on etc. Walk mode does work. I can get readings from the torque sensors. Just nothing when you are pedalling. Anyone with the same kit have any ideas for me.? Dodgy controller? Thanks
August 20, 20196 yr I have fitted a few which display do you have 0 is pedal assist switched off did you use brake cut outs have you fitted a throttle Does the speed sensor line up ? with the mark not the bigger end
August 20, 20196 yr Author I have fitted a few which display do you have 0 is pedal assist switched off did you use brake cut outs have you fitted a throttle Does the speed sensor line up ? with the mark not the bigger end Hi Peter I have the vdlc5 screen. The assist level set to 32 (max). No brake cut out fitted or throttle. Speed sensor seems to be lined up and I get a steady (and realistic) speed reading when pedalling.
August 20, 20196 yr The gap looks ok power the display on do not touch the pedals for 30 sec ,the torque sensor has to self calibrate every power up have you altered any settings other than the wheel size ? turn off the eu speed setting in the menu otherwise no assist above 15.5 unplug and reconnect all the cables I had one with a dodgy connection /plug the power assist is very different compared to a bafang mid drive the more pedal effort the more assist the motor provides

The only other major thing I changed was the assist level to 33 - max assist. I had a Pinarello Nytro which is purely pedal asssir based on torque and this is definitely providing no assistance at all.
August 21, 20196 yr Put the settings back to standard and try it, the manual is not very clear but I adjusted several things it stopped working ,put them back to factory it was then ok now I check it all works before I adjust any thing if no joy its the torque sensor connection inside the motor where did you buy it?
August 21, 20196 yr Author Just a thought - I have been reading around controllers - could the problem be I have a 52v battery and a 48v controller?
August 21, 20196 yr Yes that is the problem unless you have the moded controller from the seller in the US tsdz2 will not overvolt[unlike a bafang] if it is 48v model it will not take over 52v [48v fully charged is its max volt ]
August 21, 20196 yr From what I have read it should, but it is beyond my basic computer skills at least at present it on the list of things to do over the winter have seen somewhere pre programed controller for sale https://www.electrifybike.com/store/c38/TSDZ2_Open_Source_Firmware_(OSF)_Upgrade_Products.html#/ might help Edited August 21, 20196 yr by peter.c
August 21, 20196 yr Would discharging the battery to below 52 volts do the trick as a short term fix? I use four 35 watt 12 volt bulbs in series to discharge. Edited August 21, 20196 yr by cycling weakly
August 21, 20196 yr Author That’s one of the options I’m considering out of sheer laziness! I keep coming back to the fact that the walk assist is working though - if the controller was totally rejecting the 52v battery then I wouldn’t expect it to. August 21, 20196 yr The issue with short charging is you run the chance of unbalancing the battery as you will only be able to charge to 3.9v per cell to get 54.6v, then you create other issues to overcome. 52v nominal = 58.8 v fully charged. 48v nominal = 54.6 fully charged so as long as you are at or below 54.6v it should work. Just watch the discharge and not below 46v.
August 22, 20196 yr Author ST-link has arrived (thanks - Amazon). I have a copy of stock firmware modified for 52v which I will try to flash to it tomorrow. Just trying to get my head round the instructions - I swear bootloading Android phones was a damn site easier to understand than this! Are there any clear, step-by-step instructions on how to do this? Edited August 22, 20196 yr by gavdxb
August 22, 20196 yr Author I’ll let you know how it goes tomorrow and try to write something. The more I read the less what I am doing at this stage is a change in firmware and more like you used to do on spectrums/c64’s for game cheats/codes - pushing values into the existing data tables. Hopefully it’s going to be straightforward!
August 23, 20196 yr Now you see what I mean about the software upgrade process:rolleyes: it's only complicated the first time you set up the programming kit.
August 23, 20196 yr Woosh did you find that flashing / upgrade makes for improved power delivery and longer battery life ?
August 23, 20196 yr Author The most difficult thing was getting the laptop to connect to the cheap Amazon ST-Link. Once that was done (4 hours fiddling this morning) it was a 1 minute job. I flashed with stock firmware but for 52v and all working now. I’ll have a go at OSF next. it's only complicated the first time you set up the programming kit.
