Repairing Claud Butler Glide 1

Featured Replies

Hi

Just joined as I am new to the ebike world and purchased a used Claud Butler Glide 1 recently. It has a few problems and I had the battery rebuilt which was the first issue but now the bike powers up and the motor kicks when you start to pedal. Progress!

However the throttle doesn't seem to do anything. Two possibilities- somethings broken or , I'm being an idiot and don't understand how the throttle should operate in this type of ebike. Appreciate any advice from users of this kind of ebike if it looks like my throttle control is indeed knackered, what tests can I do to diagnose the problem.

Thanks !

Some bikes the throttle won't work unless you are pedalling at least a little, or have recently pedalled ... for safety and legal reasons. Not sure if that applies to that bike.

Thanks sjpt. Having motored around a bit this morning I've found the throttle is not completely dysfunctional. It the highest gear settings ie 5 and 6 when pedalling slowly before the motor comes on automatically, turning the throttle will cause the motor to kick in

However in all the other gears the motor comes on automatically way too early ie after a couple of pedal revolutions while the throttle is 'off'. So it's nigh on impossible to get any real exercise pedalling manually as the motor is just to keen to show its stuff. The other issue is this will of course drain the battery much quicker. I guess my question is , is there any way to adjust when the motor assist kicks in on a basic bike like this ?

Almost all ebikes have a 'power' control of some sort, typically around 5 settings; set on an LCD or panel with a few LEDs. This won't change when the motor kicks in, but will change how much power it creates when it does kick in. Typically on the lowest setting the power is very small and you will be doing most of the work.

Looking at the specs for you bike it looks as if it may not have this. That might also mean that the throttle doesn't work in quite the standard way. I'm not up enough on details of how the controller and LCD (if present) fit together to know if you could retrofit some extra control of this sort. I hope one of the real experts here may be able to help more. Good luck with it.

Can I ask where you got your battery from? Am trying to find a replacement battery for a Glide 2, thanks very much, best Emma

The only time you have complete control of power is with the PAS setting in 0 or off and only your physical input as the source.

The hub will kick in with power on any setting above 0 this is how they work, the lowest assist usually giving lowest power ranging up to high power in highest assist level.

Most legal throttle on ebikes only work once you have started pedalling, release throttle and it will not give power again unless you pedal. It is typically known as pedal first for activation.

It sounds like Declan had the battery case re-celled with new ones.
