January 19, 20251 yr For all you milk float enthusiasts, hehe ;-) I watched yt video yesterday about the 5km german motorway for trucks with pentagraph. 5 years ago, people were enthusiastic but in the last 5 years, battery prices have come down so much that nobody wants to adopt the scheme. One thing though, the reason is not so much the cost of kwh, electric trucks pay 0.39 euro per kwh, a truck loaded with 20 ton cargo uses about 1kwh per km. The economic case for electric trucks is now firmly made. What they want is 350kw charging points. I can't see why it's so hard for you to accept that electric transport is the way to go.

A number of things have damaged the image of electric transport, leading to so many people now having such a negative view. The premature launch of e-cars with ridiculous high prices, low top speeds and pathetically poor ranges, circa 70 miles but even that only in favourable conditions. Then even before these improved, governments started to announce compulsory changeover dates to electric, seeming to mean all the "petrol heads" would lose their freedom to roam afar and lose so much else of what they love about their i.c. cars. Bad enough already, but then the concept of e-cars driving themselves appeared, once again policy driven hard by our disliked and mistrusted governments. So even the pleasure of driving perhaps disappearing. Really, would you market anything in such an appalling way and then expect it to appeal to anyone? When I early adopted in 2018 it was from a different perspective. I knew how superior the e-car was at the dawn of motoring and that only the batteries back then prevented them from killing i.c. cars at birth. And of course observing how electric drive had become the dominant one of railways everywhere and even many large ships having hybrid drive, nuclear-electric, diesel electric, turbojet-electric. And my motoring needs were sufficiently limited to be able to ignore the negatives that others saw, while knowing how rapidly battery powered transport would improve. E-power will dominate all surface transport eventually, despite the clumsy way it's been introduced, meaning many of us won't see it completed in our time. .

We're now permanently under the threat of winter power cuts, and more than a million extra people are coming into the UK every year, each demanding an average of around 200 w, which means 200megawatts extra needed every year without any change to transport demands. It'll be more than 2years before Hinkley C gets up to volume, and we're already 60gw down on what was produced in 2000 - 2006. You'd already be in serious trouble if guys like me hadn't given up their life savings to save the country by fitting rooftop solar systems.

Uk adds about 4%+ every year in electricity from solar and wind under the conservatives. More is expected from labour.

The 4% is real capacity, including days that the sun doesn't shine and the wind doesn't blow. There is a quiet revolution going on in electric trucks. The operators place their hubs near solar farms from which they can buy cheap electricity directly off grid. The trucks are recharged at between 300kw to 500kw at night using cheap electricity. Each truck has about 800kwh battery, giving them about 500 miles range. These trucks are vastly better than traditional diesel trucks to drive. All the big truck manufacturers are getting on the bandwagon.

In the mean time, they are more comfortable to drive, accelerate better and cheaper to run than their diesel cousins. Companies like Tesla, CATL, BYD now make 3 million mile batteries (they are prepared to guarantee as much as 3 million miles or 25 years for storage batteries). The only thing that hold them back is the charging network because their batteries can be 10 times bigger in capacity than cars, they need 5 times faster chargers than cars. In a few more years, most of the infrastructure issues will have been sorted. you cant show me one house that uses all renewable tech and no off grid supply without generators or batts. Those trucking hubs have both normal grid connection and direct connection to wind or solar farms. They can charge at much lower cost by direct supply at the hub than on the road. They help to solve the grid capacity problem for wind and solar farms. Just think how much they save paying electricity at 10 cents a kilowatt hour instead of 39 cents on the road. In the UK, you are always paid 50% of your generation as export regardless of actual export; so try to use as much of your generation as you can to maximise your earnings. About cars, US companies don't export much cars directly to China because China impose 25% to 47% duty on American cars but they setup factories and made most of their profits selling their cars assembled in China to avoid import duty. Tesla sold 700,000 cars in China last year. Their biggest factory is in shanghai. That now comes to an end. Legacy European and American cars are pulling out of China because Chinese buy evs or hybrids. They are handing over their factories to their Chinese partners and pull out of China because Chinese now buy evs.
