September 16, 2025Sep 16 I am utterly confused by this c4 settings options wording. I am trying the “imitation” torque setting P4 =1 but not sure if that’s the best choice. C4 value P4=0 # 0 zero = startup throttle P4=1 # 0 Non-zero startup throttle WHAT IS ZERO START UP please? setting 3 and 5 in my book has retain printed what does that mean? Depending which online version of the kt3 manual I look at , the C4 parameter choices seem to vary. I live in the U.K. and do not want ,if stopped, trouble , so I’m looking for the best solution to the throttle rules and the fact that to start my trike by pedal power only is a non starter. It takes, even with the C5 setting on = 10 and c14 = 3 , about half a turn with a 10 magnet pas sensor to get the motor running. Ideally I should like to get a quick boost up to the 4 mph throttle only speed, giving me time to start pedalling and if in pas level 5 will get then full throttle with the throttle lever on full if I stop pedalling the throttle revers to the max 4 mph setting. I hope this makes some kind of sense to you i’m sure give the choices between using P4 setting of 1 or 0 and the C 4 option this should achievable or nearly achievable ? thank you for reading this post.
September 16, 2025Sep 16 P4 /1 provides current control , each PAS level giving a max level of current. Speed is max in each PAS level. P4/0 provides speed control so max current in all levels with varying max speed in each PAS level. With P4/1 one gets 13%/20%/33%/50% & 100% current via the five PAS levels.
September 16, 2025Sep 16 Torque simulation is current control, where each selected level gives a different current (power). The alternative setting is speed control, where each selected level gives maximum current with a different speed limit, which is horrible, so that's an easy setting. Zero start means that the throttle works independently, which is illegal. Non-zero start means that it will only work while pedalling. Therefore P4=1 is the only allowed setting. Most of the C4 settings are a waste of time, except C4=3, which gives independent start assist up to 4 mph, which is legal, plus it becomes a level 5 boost button while pedalling above 4 mph, which is very useful. Something is not right if it takes so long for the motor to start. Normally, KT controllers haave a very fast response time. Try setting those things back to defaults.
September 16, 2025Sep 16 For a speed control device aka a thumb or twist throttle then to be legal set P4/1 & C4/3 this allows legal throttle use under pedal first. This means no peddling no inexpedient speed device.
September 16, 2025Sep 16 All the KT's I have used have always given me PAS rotation with less then 1/4 movement and to be more exact nearer 1/8 rotation. One can also get 4mph via walk assist , depress the down button in one of the PAS levels. Use P4/1 & C4/3 setting. To have legal throttle use one will have to at least ghost pedal. If one has C15 make sur eit is set to 06 for walk assist. Edited September 16, 2025Sep 16 by Nealh
September 16, 2025Sep 16 Check your PAS disc set up , make sure the magnet disc is very close to the sensor head and the magnets are 1mm or less gap to the sensor. Also check your C1 setting , try all three lower value options 00/01 & 02.
September 19, 2025Sep 19 Thank you all for the replies Have you checked the 1mm gap, like Neal suggested? Excess gap can give the problem you've described.
September 19, 2025Sep 19 Something else to mention, ensure the magnetic disc is firmly seated and can't be moved around it's axis. If one can part rotate it manually by hand around it's axis , then it needs permanently securing. Most users rely on the plastic splines to hold said disc to BB axle, personally I always mechanically fix the disc to the inner chain ring as I always utilise a 2x set up.
