December 5, 200916 yr Being technically challenged. The way I have seen it explained is that on an 8 gear hub 1 & 8 are the same range as on a 27 speed dérailleur and the other 6 are spaced out in between giving a lot more range. Now, not sure if this is totally correct. The other advantage is if you have to come to a stop on a hill with a hub gear you can select whatever gear you want while stationery, that has to be a good thing! Plus the reliability and lack of maintenance factor. I dont know how they work though......... Edited December 5, 200916 yr by eddieo
December 5, 200916 yr Author Thanks guys, it was just one of those things that I had never really thought about. The last time I rode a bike with hub gears was about 1977, I should imagine they're of a very high standard nowadays.
December 5, 200916 yr You tube is your friend. There is other links on this page showing how they work....a picture tells a thousand words:)

December 5, 200916 yr Give me strength This is a good summary: Hub gear - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia According to wikipedia, a bicycle would go backwards. Nick
December 5, 200916 yr According to wikipedia, a bicycle would go backwards. Nick Well it is only a simple epicyclic gear mechanism
December 6, 200916 yr Well spotted Nick! It's amazing how much confusion there is about epicylic operation, even the simple ones in hub motors. .
