    Hard tail or full sus

Muggles term came from new member, I like better than unassisted. Ebike really are like magic bikes.

    Hard tail or full sus

The high gearing on eBikes is more factor than weight for unassisted climbing. Typical eMtb would come with 38T chainring, compared to 28-32T on muggles bike. Try climbing steep hill in 3 or 4 gear with extra 10kg and you will have some idea of how it feels.

    Hard tail or full sus

FS far more capable and comfortable at speed. Go for 140mm trail or better. As for any FS maintenance is higher and more expensive, but pleasure factor is higher than HT. The FS definitely comes into its own at higher climb speeds. Bosch and Yamaha displays are vunerable in crash and Bosch...

    Giant Road e+1 newbie....

It works on Shimano Steps for 5 minutes then error14, ie "caught you tampering". To clear put things back to original and ride with err14 displayed. Heard same for Bosch. With newer Bosch and Shimano drives going for magnets on disc brake, tampering is going to become harder.

What bikes should we be looking at?

Test ride a few different bikes in different price brackets including Bosch or Shimano middrive. NB these are typically £2k each.

    27 gears on an E-bike?

The CX drive should have enough grunt with 9-10 spd 11-40t cassette to haul a fully load touring bike up any sealed road hill. Of course if you are serious about touring then rolhoff hub is only way to go. The advance of rolhoff is any hill can be tackled in Eco for when battery range is critical.

    Small frame ebike

Dropper posts were designed for MTBs, dropping seat so you can get you butt and weight over rear wheel on steep descent. As I've discovered along with lots of others is they also allow you to lower seat when stopped, a nice bonus. Typically they have remote leveler on handlebar, push it while...

    Small frame ebike

Add a dropper seatpost and you can always have your feet on ground when stopped. You will have to forgo a suspension seatpost. Fat tires and coil sprung seat should help.

    Why Derailleurs gears?

Buy decent derailleur eg deore 9spd should do it. Sunrace do 11-40t cassette if you need to climb steep hills. I've upgraded from altuis to deore, huge difference in quality of shifting.

    Buying my first e-bike

We can thank ecar industry especially tesla for a massive cash injection into battery technology. Ebikes, eHelicopters (yes they have finally made it to commercial production) and ePlanes will all be possible with new battery and engine technology.

    lots of hate out there

Not all comments are bad. While waiting at lights with couple of other bike commuters, one looked at my ebike and said I should go first as I'd be faster up hill in front of us. Ebikes are becoming part of commuting scene here, see more a more every month. Quite few conversions. Daily slogging...

    Buying my first e-bike

Middrives are more energy efficient as they use bikes gears to maintain their optimum rpm. Hubs only have onr gear while asking motor to run at large rpm range. Its like comparing cars with 5spd gearbox vs 1spd gearbox.

Helping wife back on to bike after pregnancy

He is going for 250W so front wheel might be OK especially if it has rigid forks. Makes for easier installation. Would also help balance weight of kid on back.

Looking for a reliable mid range eBike

The Moustache Samedi 28 may a bit more exspensive but it does have few nice pluses. 1) 500Wh battery 2) Performance drive which 60nm compared to Steps and Active 50nm. 3) SLX gears, quality gears are a must on middrives. 4) lights, mudguards, rack. Small things but they make a big difference.

    Buying my first e-bike

Bosch Active or Shimano STEPs with 500wH should give 80km no problem in eco if there are not to may hills or you are willing to turn assist on the flat. I've seen a a couple STEPs bikes with 500Wh, up to now it has been 400wh. Same goes for Bosch Active. Maybe able to negotiate an upgrade on...

Helping wife back on to bike after pregnancy

My issue is donor bike, 15yr MTB with Vbrakes, front shock is likely to be shot. Kits are great if starting with good donor otherwise factory new eBike might be better way to go. Larger wheels 700c or 29inch will be better at speed than 26". Test ride a few new ebikes with different drives and...

Lack of full suspension tour bikes

Modifying a FS MTB may not workout. The R&M a designed for long distance touring in comfort, FS MTB are not.

    What electric mountain bike.

Try a Bosch CX drive in Turbo, I'd be surprised if you still think a throttle is needed. £2000-2500 would get you OK hardtail eMTB with CX drive.

Can I use Kalkhoff battery charger in USA

If you can hold off buying another ebike till next year, the new bikes with latest quiet Bosch Active drives will be out. Kalkhoff will be sure to have some in their range. Other plus they should have new 500wh battery inside frame. Kalkhoff make great bikes unfortunately Impulse drive has let...
