    Leaving the EU

I imagine a lot of us, if not the majority. Not sure it's relevant to the discussion though. Members of this forum tend to be in the second half of their life and I assume their ancestors migrated to the UK long before the EU existed.

Failed on my first big hill

It's funny you mention that....... That'll be the deathbike. I think it's still a record holder. It's made by a user over at Endless Sphere called liveforphysics (LFP). LFP is the very person in the 'Science, Physics, Math and Myth' thread posted above who clears up much of the misconception. I...

Failed on my first big hill

Seemed pretty conclusive to me. The only reason the thread is so long is that the DD torque/speed wind myth is so widely propagated and so many people arent aware of the truth.

    Strange disc brake phenomenon

Out of interest, can anyone speculate as to why hot rotors/pads would improve braking performance in this instance?

    Strange disc brake phenomenon

I've cleaned the rotors with surgical spirit and removed the glazed surface of the pads with some abrasive. I only did the pads previously, so hopefully doing the two together will solve the issue. I'll report back on Monday after my afternoon run to the Post Office. Thanks guys.

    Strange disc brake phenomenon

I haven't tried cleaning the rotors yet. Is acetone a suitable alternative to rubbing alcohol? I don't have any rubbing alcohol, but I can see my GF's nail varnish remover from where I am sitting :) EDIT: Scrap that, it's got a moisturising oil additive to make your brake rotors nice and soft...

    Strange disc brake phenomenon

I have tried cleaning them with an abrasive, but it made no difference. As mentioned, I hardly ever use them, so never got round to purchasing and replacing the pads.

    Best cycling app?

The two at the top of my list are: 1) CycleStreets - Fantastic bike routing unequaled by any other app. 2) OsmAnd - Great all-purpose mapping app. Both of them are powered by Open Street Map data and are much more detailed than Google Maps, especially when it comes to off-road mapping. EDIT...

    Strange disc brake phenomenon

I've experienced a strange behaviour from a set of Tektro Auriga Comp hydros since I acquired the bike they came with about 18 months ago. The bike in question also features regenerative braking via a DD hub motor, which means I hardly ever use the physical brakes, hence why I ignored the issue...

Failed on my first big hill

Swings and roundabouts really. Sure, higher currents require heavier conductors, but the lower voltages involved give a simplified battery and BMS. This probably isn't much of a concern for legal bikes, but once you start dealing with multi-kW setups and complex battery arrangements, gives food...

Failed on my first big hill

I think what this thread reinforces, is that there's no such thing as the perfect bike, just one that's right for a particular purpose. The advice to try as many as possible before buying is the best post made throughout.

Failed on my first big hill

Yeah, my 'everyday' bike is a hardtail DD running 3kW hot off the charger. As you can imagine, my battery packs are somewhat larger than yours. I love the simplicity and reliability of a DD hub and when I'm cruising with only the noise of the tyres and the wind in my face, wouldn't consider...

Failed on my first big hill

That's a fair point I missed. I'm far too abusive on geared hubs for them to last long and gave up on them a while ago for all but the most lightweight of my bikes. As you can see, I never really consider them in my thought process.

Failed on my first big hill

*shakes hands* You never know, maybe we'll all get to ride together one day in a big pedelec love-fest tour. Of course, I imagine I'll be spending most of my time waiting for you at the top of each hill while I watch you climb it at a snails pace. Sorry, couldn't resist it :p

Failed on my first big hill

Also, I'd like to publicly apologise to you Flud. Although I'd still chose to 'stand my ground' as so to speak and call you on the BS, the name calling was uncalled for and a dick move on my part. Sorry Flud.

Failed on my first big hill

Having already jumped to your defence in this thread, I'm now going to go the other way. I thought that old myth about motor windings and turn counts being better for one purpose or another had been dispelled. Assuming the same copper fill, a lower turn count motor running on a lower voltage...

Failed on my first big hill

In d8veh's defence, it was me who called you ignorant. In my opinion, that label has only since been reinforced.

Failed on my first big hill

Flud, have you picked up on the fact that your posts seem to create so much friction? Both your ignorance and arrogance is quite astounding. I can't imagine how long it has taken to hone these qualities to such proportions. Somebody close to me once said "We have two ears and one mouth because...

Failed on my first big hill

Exactly what you describe is the achilies heel of the torque sensor. It is not a fault though, just a feature by design.
