Does an E-Bike make things too easy?

It does depend a bit on the bike. My throttle powered Brompton makes me lazy but my crank / torque sensored Kalkhoff helps keep me fit. I could not do my daily commute on an unpowered bike (hills too steep) and would not do regular 40-60 mile rides without some assistance. So, with an unpowered...

    Summer expeditions?

Are any others planning tours over the summer holidays? We are going to be taking our Kalkhoff Sahel Compacts on the train to London and cycling back home (Devon/Cornwall border) - a trip of about 350 miles over 6 days. Previously we did the same but only to Bristol. John O'Groats next year?

    ebike recommendation

Kin, I would strongly advise that you try some bikes out before making your purchase. The Moustache is a good bike but you might like to check out Kalkhoff, Riese & Muller / Grace and KTM. You should find adverts for most of these on this forum.

New website, what do you think?

Martin, Just looking at the main bikes page: This sentence doesn't make sense:- The German & French (European) quality build and the excellent reliability it's really not worth going with cheaper more ‘rattly’ models. I think this probably isn't what you mean! All of our electric bikes...

    Newbie with dodgy knees!

KudosDave, I sent you a PM (or started a conversation as it's now called) a while ago. Have you seen it?

    Newbie with dodgy knees!

Silas Flyn, if you want to try some more bikes I am not too far away from you and have some different bikes that you could try. Check out my website http://www.bikehigher.co.uk and get in touch if you're interested.

    New Yamaha unit, more details

With respect, a 100 metre ride is not much better than a 5 minute chat. Test rides around a car park tell you nothing, a good few miles including some decent hills is needed to find out what it's really like. But I agree with your sentiment - there is no substitute for actually trying one out.

    Hi from Oxford

Welcome Mike. I used to live near Oxford and enjoyed cycling in the Chilterns. Enjoy your Izip for a bit and when you feel like a change you have an Electric Transport Shop branch where you can try a variety of other bikes. Also not far from Cyclezee in Milton Keynes. In fact, you're quite well...

Do 20" bikes pull better than bigger bikes?

I don't know for certain but I'm fairly sure the motor internal gearing is not different. It might just be the chain wheel to rear sprocket ratio that provides the speed setting. I don't think the motor spins any faster. As you may know, the wheel circumference is a software setting on the...

Headset Help - Kalkhoff Sahel Compact

Not a folding stem on the Kalkhoff. I did fix it but I can't remember for certain how I did it in the end. There is no bolt from the top. I think the horizontal bolt at the base of the height adjuster needed to be loosened, then the ring beneath that could be moved. It was a bit trial and error...

Do 20" bikes pull better than bigger bikes?

20" bikes like the Kalkhoff Sahel Compact and the similar AVE (MH7 I think) make great all-round bikes - very stable, comfortable and great hill climbers. They are are nothing like many cheap 20" folders (powered or unpowered) that ride a bit like toy bikes (to my thinking). They are proper...

Are you anywhere near Bristol? 50Cycles have a new shop officially opening this Saturday. They say they will have some used bikes available from £500. Might be worth a look if you're not too far away.

What one would be the better second hand buy

I think the C11 is a really smart looking bike in that colour. Difficult to appreciate in a photo but 'in the flesh' it's very classy.

    work, leisure and fun!

It's not really designed as a hill climber but if you're not too heavy it does ok. I'm sure Kudosdave will be along in a bit to share his extensive experience of the bike. I like the Kudos Secret but no doubt others will soon be suggesting the Woosh folders.

Anyone had an interesting ride recently ?

That looks idyllic Eddie but be careful around those cows. This years colours for the Sahel Compact are charcoal grey or bright orange. Both in matt. Lovely bikes. If you're interested in a used one I have spare that I'm open to selling on.

    Battery Sizes

If you live out in the wild lands a 10Ah battery will barely get you to your local shop and back!

Anyone had an interesting ride recently ?

Did a 53 mile round trip to Launceston today (in between the heavy showers). Checking out our stamina for our planned 350 mile London to Devon jaunt next month.

What one would be the better second hand buy

The first is a really nice almost current bike but for not that much more (well £600) you can get a new Kalkhoff with the upgraded Impulse 2 motor. For a secondhand purchase I would more likely go for the second. This has the old Panasonic motor / battery which has less power but has proved...

    Hi from Wales

Welcome Richard. It sounds like ebikes could be just the thing you're looking for. If you're not too far from Bristol, that's a really good place to try out a variety of bikes. 3 different ebike shops covering about a dozen brands. It's best to try riding some bikes early on in the research so...
