Advice on setting up Tongxin / Ping

Andy, I had the same problem. On more recent controllers, Tongxin changed the colours of some wires. You will have the throttle connected to a set on the controller which are something like red, black and green. If you re-connect the throttle to the other set of wires, which are red, black...

I made the leap and left the battery at home.

Great thread! After having commuted for 6 months by electric bike I've now been using a non-electric for 18 months. Phil, cyclocross bikes are this years fashion in the bike shops! However it may not be exactly what you want as they tend to have more of a racing geometry (steep seat tube...

    DIY electric bike builders dream!

A good result for the seller - looks like someone is going to pay more for the parts than it would cost to get a couple of new motors and controllers sent over from China!

    Tyres - going backwards!

With some tyres its more of an issue than others. I fitted a Marathon plus on the wrong way round the other day, and realised as soon as I'd finshed - but it is going to have to stay that way for a while, as its not a problem with that tread pattern.

motor or controller fault - what do you think?

All is not lost! The tourist office in Angers has put me on to a shop which has electric bikes for hire. Picking one up in the morning!

motor or controller fault - what do you think?

Well I tried changing the controller and it hasn't fixed it! So 90% sure it's the motor. The only possibility is that I need to short the pedelec sensor. The spare controller I have is an eCrazyman one which has connections for one. I brought the sensor but I'd need to take the crank off...

motor or controller fault - what do you think?

My bad fortune with Tongxin components continues! We're in France and this morning, after about 10 miles the motor, which is a 175rpm in a 700c wheel, cut out going up a moderate hill. When I restarted it, the motor was turning over at low revs (c. 3mph equivalent), and making a bit of noise...

What a wonderful day part 2 - Route 21 ride - Electric to Eastbourne

Glad you enjoyed the ride. My wife and I did that route from London to Eastbourne as our first electric tour at Easter last year. Highlight, apart from reaching the sea, was getting to a hotel with a roaring fire after riding for two hours through the snow on Easter Sunday morning. I think...

Breaking in a new Li Battery deep or shallow cycle?

Ping was recommending full discharge on the first three cycles when i got my first battery from him last year

    Help with electrics please

I've come to this one late and agree that your best bet is to put it back to ETS. I note your controller looks like an eCrazyman one, not Tongxin's own. I've used both and had both blow - which I think it most likely. With my first one, John on this forum kindly did a test for me and found...

A vision of the future of cycling in London

I experienced it for myself just the other week - it didn't happen many times but there were certainly stretches where it was mudguard to mudguard stuff! However in the Nehterlands my experience was that it is possible to maintain a relatively high average speed because there are so few...

A vision of the future of cycling in London

Steve, Remember that the governing philosophy behind cycle route design in this country has generally been to get cyclists off the road and out of the way of the cars. You seem to have fallen into the trap of thinking they are for the convenience of cyclists!

A vision of the future of cycling in London

I agree with that. My assessment was that there were about three times as many bikes as normal on my route. I adapted my route as a result (for example on the cycle crossing at Hyde Park Corner there were too many bikes to be safe so I thought it was better to take my chances with the cars)...

    Magura Brakes

Valid point - I have to admit I was with Flecc until you explained. For gradual deceleration on a pedelec bike such as the Wisper, you do need brake cut-outs to kill the motor. Doesn't apply of course to non-pedelecs such as Ezee. My set-up is non-pedelec, but I prefer to have brake...

    E-mopeds to win over e-bikes?

I couldn't have put it better myself! In the Netherlands they have an infrastructure and (presumably) a legislative framework which encourages Solex-type low powered scooters, and they are everywhere. Here we don't, and they aren't. I think e-scooters definitely have a great future in the...

    E-mopeds to win over e-bikes?

On my recent trip to the Netherlands I was struck by how many petrol and electric scooters, or 'Solexes' there were. They are ridden, virtually always without helmets, in the bike lanes, by all sorts of people. I guess we don't have the low-powered moped class that allows the rider to go...

    E-bike sales

They are Dutch-style bikes, more like the Gazelles and Batavuses. I've just checked their web site as I thought I'd post a picture. However, the site gives prices starting at €750 for a little folder and €1400+ for the proper bikes. Either the price I saw in the window of their Delft branch...

    E-bike sales

Those figures tie in with what I posted re my observations on my recent trip to the Netherlands. As you say, Flecc, mostly high price / low power Gazelles, Batavus's and Giants, with hub motors. Halfords (which has a chain of bike shops there) is starting to sell its own electric model, priced...

Advice on setting up Tongxin / Ping

Good to hear you're getting decent mileages, John. We avoided extended use of full throttle on controller 5, made it round the rest of our Netherlands tour, and it has now done 160 miles without failing (260 rpm in 700c wheel), so I shall persevere with it! Frank
