    New range of Cytronex bikes

I thought it an odd idea too but there was a poster on here a month or so back who was floating the idea of electrifying his fixed wheel bike, which suggests there could be demand for it.

Getting ready for Tour de Presteigne

That is a great picture. It really shows the speed you were going, that you have got a well balanced and designed bike, and that there was a lot of skill involved in getting it round those corners rather than (just) brute motor power. I noted from the earlier pics that you had sensible...

    Ping batteries - update

Someone was asking about the current prices of Ping batteries. I can't find the post now, but I have just bought a second one. My first one, a year ago, was £160 delivered. Last month's cost £222 (again, delivered to me). NB virtually all the difference in price is the £/$ exchange rate...

Getting ready for Tour de Presteigne

Well done, Nick! Looks like you swept all before you. To win by almost 40 seconds in a race lasting three minutes is pretty decisive! I'm going to be putting together a drop-handlebar e-bike for my wife over the next few weeks, so would be interested in your thoughts on where you found it...

    Best way to Electrify Tandem

I'm not surprised you're considering adding power as that hill on your doorstep must be quite a disincentive to use the tandem. I've toyed with doing it to ours as my wife is also no longer such a powerful pedaler. I agree with Flecc's comments regarding motors and also your own thoughts...

    My frame has snapped

Firstly, bad luck, and I hope you get it sorted out. Fortunately it's not a problem I believe has been reported before on a Wisper so looks like a one-off. The curved crossbar of the Wisper does mean there is more seat tube above the weld than would otherwise be the case. Others with...

    Cytronex

Mike, The Cytronex will handle almost like a normal bike. You will hardly notice any resistance from the motor and both motor and battery are light. It will feel much closer to a normal bike than it will to a Powabyke or Wisper, partly because it's a bit lighter, but mainly because the...

    CrampBuster on an X-bike throttle

I find holding throttles open a pain, so I've taken the spring out of mine. So much more pleasant to use!

    Tongxin Controller

Tongxin controllers have a reputation for burning out. A year or two ago they all used to go quite quickly, even when not covered up. Tongxin seem to have improved them now, but I wouldn't take any chances and put it where it will get maximum air cooling.

    Electric Fixed Gear

The main problem with earlier Tongxins was that the controllers had some under-specced components, so kept blowing. This was more likely to happen with more demanding applications, and bigger wheels - other things being equal - means higher gearing for a given motor and hence a more demanding...

    Electric Fixed Gear

Not so; it's just a question of choosing the right motor speed for your application. For a 16" wheel you'll want a 260rpm to avoid it spinning! Cytronex owners rave about their bikes, a Torq owner on this site actually replaced his motor with a Tongxin, and my own bike goes very well - all...

    Electric Fixed Gear

To add a couple more points: I agree that the Tongxin motor would give you the most satisfactory result for this, being lighter than others on the market and with increasing reliability. In case you're not aware, there are other suppliers apart from Cytronex; I can recommend JohnP on this...

    Electric Fixed Gear

You could add a kit to a fixed wheel bike in the same way as any other. I suspect few have done it, but whatever you like, I guess. If you shut the motor off suddenly it might feel a bit heavy on your legs, but there's no reason why it can't be done.

Keeping the Lafree on the road

A very useful article for those looking to keep Lafrees going. I was very interested by the idea of adding a sensorless controller, given that my dabbles with Tongxin motors have led me to get through quite a few of them! When I was looking last year there were very few alternatives...

The Times seems to have discovered the electric bike!

Go-Cycle has clearly been on a PR offensive as there's also a fairly flattering write-up, albeit by someone who confesses not to like electric bikes, in the latest Velo Vision.

Quick Release - Making it Slow

Yes! But I suppose it's cheaper than getting a new wheel. A cheaper but less secure option would be just to replace the quick release with a normal skewer. Frank

Hopes for 20 mph assist limit dashed

It's a different topic but that is the generally accepted view. It is because cyclists, are most frequently hit by drivers who did not see them, in particular when making left turns, and are rarely hit by vehicles from behind. Therefore you are far safer in the part of the road where the cars...

    Cycle helmet wearers are reckless

Hmm, is that the best you can find, John! For me it's not a religious argument, it's a practical one. If there was moderately convinving evidence from a credible study that bicycle helmets worked for on-road cycling, I would wear one. The burden of proof is obviously on the helmet industry as...
