Help with Folding Bike with Pedelec, Belt Driven, Single Speed

A belt is all but impossible to fit to a folder because the belt is very picky about alignment and tension.

    New bike thread.

I'm no expert, but the levers look similar to the ones I had on 'racing' bikes in the 70s. If they are not original, I reckon they are at least of the correct period.

A working dongle - at last

To raise the gearing you need either a smaller cog on the back or a bigger one on the front. Changing the back one is not an option because the smallest - fastest gear - cog is already as small as it can be without the chain jumping. There are different sized rings available for the front...

No, please not another photo of a ruddy Ansmann.

    Another serious contender

I see Trek has launched a small range of Bosch e-mtbs. It appears some effort has been made, Trek has redesigned the motor casing to give shorter chain stays for sharper handling, and included a bash guard. I'd not heard of the new Treks until a couple of days ago when I saw a couple in a bike...

    Opinions Please.....?

There is a difference between an incompetent retailer who cannot be bothered with your inquiry and genuine lack of supply. The bike trade has always suffered from the latter, if not the former. Buying stock for a bike shop is a risky - and therefore skilled - business. Too little and you...

    haibike frame protectors

If you can propel a full sus mountain ebike at 50mph+ on a dirt path you should change your user name to Clark Kent.

How many people are using there e-bike off-road?

Charming. Some mountain bikers are even more hostile to ebikers than roadies. There are concerns in the MTB community that ebikers go too fast and chew the trails, which could result in more access restrictions which would effect everyone. It's obvious to me a legal ebike hasn't got enough...

Haibike sDuro Hard Seven or Trekking

Control freakery from Ze Germans sounds likely, but there are so many Bosch motors in circulation, anyone - 'unauthorised' or not - can easily get hold of one. I expect Shimano bought a few Bosch bikes and pulled them to bits before releasing Steps. The Japanese certainly did that with motor...

Worth asking your house insurance for a quote. The extra premium for me is about £30 a year, which I believe is about average.

Help! Which bike for 6 mile hilly commute

Averaging 18mph in hilly conditions is going to be impossible on a legal ebike, and hard work on a 'slightly illegal' one. Most of us on here are cyclists who like the assistance to add to the cycling fun. If you are only interested in a bike as a commuting tool, then a petrol moped would be...

    tyre size

I expect that will be a good choice. Worth getting ebike specific tyres because sidewalls can crack on others. Conti is a good make, the alternative would have been Schwalbe Marathons. They are hard wearing, but can lack grip.

Help! Which bike for 6 mile hilly commute

That's not very reassuring. I did heat the front hub motor on my Brompton Nano more than I wanted to on one occasion. No ill effects I could determine. I used to check the motor case of my Bosch bikes occasionally, but gave up because I could never detect any significant warming.

    tyre size

The numbers equate to a difference in width of only a few millimetres so any of the tyres will fit. Assuming the tyres are roughly the same in other respects - tread, compound, etc - the change will make no noticeable difference.

Or if speed and arriving unflustered is your main aim buy a petrol moped.

Help! Which bike for 6 mile hilly commute

To do 15mph+ uphill you will need an illegal or derestricted bike. The Granite would be a waste of time because you would be trying to propel a 20kg+ bike unassisted uphill - you would be better off with an ordinary push bike which would be much lighter.

    Need help on new tyres

Sidewall cracks can be a problem, so it is worth getting something specced as suitable for ebikes. Grip is not a strong point of Marathons, so the Conti linked by d8 might be worth a try.
