To suspend your bum or not?

I'm getting on fine with my Far East sprung seat. I'd totally forgotten about them - the last time I had one was way back, some forty years ago. That, in combo with my more upright riding position has transformed the bike.

SLA batteries - do i leave on constant charge?

All depends how smart the charger is. Most supplied chargers ram in an initial charge rate and keep on charging, even though the batteries are topped up. This does them no good. What's needed is a smarter charger that will switch to a low rate of maintenance charge at the end of the main charge...

Radio 4 Join the Bike Helmet Debate

In one accident, I slid upside down from a car bonnet onto my head. The rim of the helmet broke my collarbone. I leave it to your imagination how much force my skull would have been subjected to if it had been helmetless. <twitch> And it never did me any harm. <twitch> On a couple of other...

Radio 4 Join the Bike Helmet Debate

Here I am. That must rank amongst the most fatuous arguments ever, against helmet use.

Knee position when riding advice please

Problem with building the pedal up, is it might be too high on the Top Dead Centre (TDC) to borrow a car term, which might be a problem for one with restricted hip movement. The modifier crank-shortener only moves the pedal pivot, and keeps the TDC distance short, too.

    Solar powered e-biking cellist

Neat. Like that bloke who's doing the world tour by solar-charging his ebike batteries as he goes.

    Well, that was interesting...

Stap me vitals, Snowy, what a difference! I decided to ignore the back pain today and carry on with the Bomber fork conversion, eventually finishing it at 10pm. Just a quicky up the road and back (also giving me a chance to try out a pair of cheapy 5W LED lamps), but I'm impressed by how well...

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... ...Laptop batteries on fire, off the shoulder of O'Ryan

    Illegal Bikes

Kit car owners have to do it. I'm unsure of the current state of it, but it used to be relatively cheap (approx £250, iirc), but I think things have changed recently. Basically, all the inspectors are looking for on a car, m/cycle, trike, etc, are that the various Construction and Use...

    Portable electric pumps ?

To do it lightly, is the thing. All of the portable start/pump car-related ones are far too heavy, but the small compressors can be found on their own, and use a 12V feed from your battery pack. Amazon.co.uk: 12v compressor The problem with most of them is the quality - some of them are utter...

    Illegal Bikes

When idiots buy things like this... YouTube - ErockIT bike is pedal powered and electric motor assisted like an e-bike. Goes 50mph or 80kmh ... and have accidents involving peds with them, there will be the usual 'ban it' outcry from the knee-jerkers. This damn thing is far more an e-motorcycle...

    Illegal Bikes

As far as I'm concerned, the power-weight ratio of my 750Watter and the bike and me is just about right. The usual cack-handed EU legislation fails to take that into account.

Radio 4 Join the Bike Helmet Debate

I caught the part of the programme dealing with helmets, this afternoon. For me, it's a no-brainer - I was wearing crash hats long before they were compulsory on motorbikes and the only times I've been knocked off my motorbikes and sustained helmet damage that would have left my head seriously...

    The most efficient motorised transport

What are you taking into account to reach 60%? An IC engine in road use is lucky to reach 28% thermal efficiency, and only in very specialised applications, such as huge slow-turning marine engines, does better than that - sometimes 50%, which is hardly relevant.

    Treat the Earth Well

Unfortunately, Henry was an ass. I'd look long and hard for a source of a quote before I chose him. A thoroughly unpleasant piece of work, indeed. And harder and harder to extract.

    A salutary tale

I've no doubt it applies to some :)

    Treat the Earth Well

Well, exactly so. A couple of years ago there was a huge hoohah about the Canadian tar sands. Plenty of oil there, for sure, but at the current rate of usage it would last six years - buggrall really.

    Conhismotor 36V 750W kit arrived

Non-geared rear fit. Another thing I notice (as has been commented on in ES) is the gauge of the main feed wires to the hub - a bit skinny, in my view, but there's not much room to squeeze anything beefier in through the 'ole.
