A working dongle - at last

....update.... The dongle conked out a week or two ago after about 17 months of use. Changing the batteries didn't work, so I emailed Badass in the hope they might at least give me a good discount on a new one. Lui replied, swiftly as always, to say as an owner of an early type 3.1 dongle I...

Bigbear or Sunbear, that is the question.

It's a new model so I doubt many of us will have tried one. Fair to assume it will have the usual strengths and weaknesses of other woosh bikes. If you are happy with your wife's woosh, you are likely to be equally pleased with either Bear.

Poor air quality forecast for tomorrow - mitigated by riding an electric bike?

I recall years ago being at the top of Sydenham Hill in London. Looking north, you could see an enormous grey cloud hanging over the West End and City. Visibility of that cloud probably has something to do with time of year and atmospheric conditions, but it was certainly there that day. I...

    Touring: battery charging questions

I've not tried charging an ebike battery in the manner you suggest, but have charged my laptop in various pubs and cafes. Never had a problem. Last time was in a Starbucks which had a twin socket just above the table. That must be for customers who want to charge devices. Only problem I can...

    Cassette wear?

Boardman bikes are pretty good, but they are expert at using cheap components where the customer is unlikely to notice, and better components where customers are more likely to check. A lot of the cheaper SRAM gears aren't up to much, not least because Shimano, over the years, has managed to...

    Cassette wear?

Gold standard maintenance is hard to argue against, so I won't. But were you impecunious, you could have carried on using the old chain until such time it slipped on the old cassette. Nothing is lost or harmed, both were going to be replaced, but you would probably have got useful extra miles...

    Spokes for Oxydrive Wheel

Frightened by what they don't understand. Pity, because there's nothing to be frightened of. The other possibility is none of them is capable of rebuilding any wheel, but I would hope they are not that incompetent.

    Spokes for Oxydrive Wheel

A competent bike shop could cut a spoke to length and rethread it. When you source a spare, be sure to get a few. Unfortunately, there is usually a domino effect with broken spokes, once one goes, others will follow. A better job is a rebuild with all new spokes. A cheaper alternative is to...

Holy moly... Any thoughts on this bike?

No maker has a magic wand as regards range. The bike has an 11ah battery so, very roughly, it will do about 40 miles max. Range, as always, is hugely influenced by hills, head winds and rider input. A lot of the first two and not much of the third could flatten the battery in 20 miles.

    Yet another new battery technology.

Quite, although the scientists have not invented a mobile phone battery. They have invented battery technology which, if used in an application the size of a mobile phone battery, could be charged in one minute. Presumably an ebike sized battery would take a lot longer charge, albeit it would...

    Now this looks appealing.

As with most landowners, objections to use evaporate when you dangle a few quid in front of them.

    Best bike for hills?

Hatti, who owns woosh, is about your height and rides her own bikes. A word with her would be helpful. She's also not the type to flog you a bike that's not suitable just to make a sale.

    Keeping up with a roadie

There's an old saying, 'a bike for every ride', so I thought about speccing the ideal bike for this one. A dongled Bosch bike and four batteries would do it. But I may as well have some extra grunt as well, so it would be an Oxygen 13ah MTB and two spare batteries. About 40ah really ought to...

Stealth bomber arrived this week with a 5400w motor

Wise words about cycling in London. I enjoy it, but you do have to be at the top of your game. Doable for the occasional journey, but a big ask for a twice a day commute.

    Keeping up with a roadie

Pretty much, although I don't think any of the kit we had is sufficiently accurate to accurately measure such fine tolerances. For that, you would need a calibrated radar trap. My AVE is the older Bosch control and only reads kms. It was immediately apparent he was doing 26-28km/h - the cut...

    Keeping up with a roadie

I thought you might know something about this topic. Very few roadies know the first thing about ebikes, so you are in a unique position to judge. Even with my inferior fitness level, stop start riding through town is the one place where I could give the roadie a run for his money. I just...

    Keeping up with a roadie

I thought about that and was steeling myself to bat back some snidey comments from roadies. The place looked a dump to me, but I don't doubt its historical credentials. For those wondering what we are on about: http://www.eurekacyclistscafe.co.uk/
