    KTM Corner

Nice looking bike in every respect except the forks. They look crummy and kill the overall look. To coin the phrase: "Nice legs, shame about the boat race."

Changing headset on Kalkhoff Pro Connect

Good effort, tillson. It's not a job I'd fancy taking on, even with helpful pics and diagrams.

    KTM Corner

I'm pleased to hear that. As regards KTM not being able to carry all the spares, I reckon if me and thee were given free reign in the factory we'd be able to find something to sort almost any breakage on almost any bike, let alone a KTM one. I'm not saying every customer should automatically...

    KTM Corner

So I'm confusing the importer/maker am I? Let's put it simply, FLI should have access to spares. KTM in Austria should be able to send you any spare you don't have in 24 hours. It's Austria, not another galaxy, far, far away. There is simply no coherent service back up, that's a simple...

    KTM Corner

Agreed. And it's the usual 'we'd like to help but...' response from FLI. I know asking this is tantamount to blasphemy, but why does the importer not have any spares? A couple of Panasonic wheels would seem a sensible move. Not to mention forks, as mentioned in another thread. So what if...

    Haibiken xduro rx

It clips onto the speed sensor on the chainstay. No wires, nothing else, it just works. Only downside is it makes the speedo give a false reading over about 11mph. The wired-in dongles do the same, so I cannot understand why anyone would buy and fit one of those when the Badass one works so well.

    Haibiken xduro rx

The Badass dongle is cordless, much neater, and usually cheaper than the wired in ones. https://www.badassebikes.com/en/ Several people one here have one - including me - and I can confirm it works well.

375 miles need new brake pads!

Hydraulic discs are 100 per cent better. All you might lose is the cut-out, which wouldn't bother me if it were my bike.

    Tyre pressure gauges

You probably already have a pump, but I would buy a track pump with a fitted pressure gauge. That will allow you to monitor pressure as you inflate, rather than faffing around with taking the pump and gauge on and off. Lots of track pumps available. Topeak Joe Blow's have a nice action...

    Help

Either bike should do what you seek, so it's going to come down to personal preference. Both sellers offer test rides, so you could have a go on the bikes if you are prepared to travel. Assuming you are able to afford both, the price difference is not that important on an item which will...

    BH Emotion serious problems

I was half-thinking about an Oxygen MTB as a winter bike, but as you know I still have a day job to attend to, so can't justify it for the use it would get. If you get something, I would be inclined to make sure the studded tyres are actually to hand. Ordering via the likes of Schwalbe can...

Macina Action 2015: a critical failure in quality control… made worse by crap customer service

Peter, I feel your pain, but the bike shop does not. It seems to me bike shops often fail to grasp that buying a new bike is a big, big, treat purchase, often with a mental dimension, taking the buyer back to childhood memories, good and bad. That your bike failed as soon as you got it home...

    First frost

You cannot do a lot more, but no tyre will give you grip on black ice. A patch of black ice is hard to spot, so there's really no easy answer. If you do take another tumble, don't feel too bad about it. You cannot beat the laws of physics - falling on black ice doesn't make you a rubbish cyclist.

Compact, short range, quality commuter bike?

I'm beginning to lose track of your required spec, but I do have a Brompton Nano and a 20" wheel bike 'like the Sahel'. I can understand you find Bromptons twitchy and prone to buffeting. The extra weight of the 'e' bits would improve that. However, a 20" bike would make a lot of difference...

Decisions, decisions, decisions... Sidmouth, Peak hill.

Parts of that hill look really nasty. Your manual job means you must be a lot fitter than most people who take to an ebike for the first time. I reckon you will still need one of the more pokey bikes, and be prepared to put in some effort on the steepest parts of the hill. A front wheel hub...

Brompton - dealer pedelec conversion with torque sensor controller?

I suspect Brompton in their ignorance and arrogance thought they could reinvent ebike systems and come up with the Holy Grail of light weight, stealth, long range and high power. As you say, they - or anybody else - cannot do that. Brompton are probably reluctant to bring out what would be no...

Compact, short range, quality commuter bike?

A Brompton with a front mounted Brommie bag - with some weight in it - is more stable because the weight damps the steering, which can be twitchy.

    Momentum Upstart gearing mods

The bike has a Sram Automatix hub. Looks like it could be possible to change the rear sprocket, although the one installed is already quite small. A bigger chain ring up front might be simpler, assuming it will work with the fitted tensioner and not foul the frame. Some hub gear makers...

    How to "fix" Brake Fade

You will know that water is most undesirable in a vehicle system. You might not know that a lot of mountain bikers happily used water as the fluid in their brakes, and lots of other liquids. I think the reason was at the time Magura was charging a fortune for a teaspoon of 'blood' fluid...

    How to "fix" Brake Fade

Did you bed them in by doing several harsh stops? If not, the pads may be glazed which won't be helping matters. You could try some disc brake cleaner - Muc Off is as good as any. Alternatively, you can now get pads with cooling fins. But I think your best bet is to address your descending...
