    Alien bikes - ceased trading

There is no doubt we live in a land of plenty when it comes to choice. Whatever consumer goodie you want, there is usually dozens to pick from. The ebike market is tiny, and like Dave, I wonder if the wide choice is sustainable.

    Hello and help please!

Your requirements are quite specialised, so I think you may struggle. Some companies don't like electric bikes at all, and adding the Euro/motorhome cover will further complicate matters. Nothing is impossible, but I expect the premium will come to hundreds, which you may feel is not good...

    Just bought my first ebike!

Self-adhesive puncture patches work well. My mate is a trained bike mechanic and ride leader. He has tried loads over the years and recommends Leeches, which you can get from Halfords. They are a bit sturdier than Park Patches, which are also good but perhaps more suited to roadie bikes. As...

    Bit of a bummer.....

On the topic of anaesthetic, when I had my hip replaced there was an option to remain awake during the operation. The leaflet advised having music on via an mp3 player, which I understood was to drown out the noise of the surgeon's saw and drill. Mmm, not a tough decision, I went for the full...

    Mad or what?

Sums up why I don't like hills. Going up would be OK, if a bit of a grind. But I would enjoy coming down even less.

Yes. So if you deplete the battery by 20 per cent, then recharge, you would do that five times to complete one full charge cycle. The battery - and bike - performs better with a full battery, so charging after every ride is a good idea. In your case, charging once a day - after two commuting...

The Smart Sams don't appear to have a puncture protection belt. They are also about £12, or half the price of a Marathon Plus, so the old adage of getting what you pay for applies. Having said that, it would have been interesting to know how many punctures you would have had if you had done...

    E-bike and conventional bike combined

As you have found, what you seek is not easy to achieve because motors and batteries are made from heavy metal. And most systems give some resistance when switched off. There was member on here who converted his road bike using a light-assist seatpost motor and bottle battery. Someone might...

Marathon Pluses come up time and time again as the most puncture resistant. They roll OK and if there is a weight penalty, the few grammes is irrelevant on a 20Kg + ebike. Wide tyres as found on most ebikes don't tend to puncture, depending on their quality. It's only roadies on their wafer...

Thanks for the offer, but Hampshire is too far for window shopping.

    Delivery problems / Bosch motors

The one I saw was at a dealer. I wouldn't have noticed, but a few of the staff were playing with it in the car park. They found it hard to believe there was insufficient heel clearance and were examining the bike trying to work out if anything was bent or assembled the wrong way round.

2 Riese & Mueller CHARGER hybrid nuvinci beltdrive

I'm certainly not outraged, each retailer wherever they are can charge what they want. There is a common theme here which is off interest to prospective buyers - German bikes, particularly high end ones, seem to be significantly cheaper from German or Austrian retailers. The difference here is...

2 Riese & Mueller CHARGER hybrid nuvinci beltdrive

I agree it's not very clear, but I think Wicky has worked it out correctly. A Nuvinci bike with an oily chain is 2,999 euro, and a Nuvinci with a belt drive is an extra 500 euro, making 3,499 euro. Which, give or take a currency speculator's stripey braces, is about £2,900.

Assuming you don't fall into the upgrading cycle, you've weighed it up more or less correctly. A new battery is likely to be your biggest single expense. Life depends on the number of full charge cycles more than age, although that does play a part. You will be doing about 3,000 miles a year...
