electric road bike... or not worth it?

the make and break thing about e-bike is handling. Putting the battery inside the frame solves that problem most elegantly. Until now, 3400mAH cells were very expensive. Not now, so you can pack 360WH inside the frame with ease. The rest is to do with the choice of tyres, crankset and...

electric road bike... or not worth it?

the choice is down to average speed. cwah, try the Woosh zephyr-B - that bike is made for riding around in London.

    How reliable is this?

these things measure the battery voltage, which is not an accurate way of measuring the state of charge of the battery because of the Peukert effect. http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/calculating_the_battery_runtime The voltage relates to the state of charge. You can use the chart...

    How reliable is this?

don't knock it, I use the battery indicator on the J-LCD all the time. When the motor is not running, it gives as good indication or even better than the LEDs in the back. So blip the brakes, wait 5 seconds, read the voltage level.

    How reliable is this?

it's normal to have all LEDs still up after 20 miles if you pedal. when all LEDs are lit, the battery capacity is above 50%. when the two outside red LEDs are off (after about 25-30 miles), the capacity is somewhere between 25% and 50% when the next two green LEDs are also off, you have less...

Are lightweight, short range e-bikes the answer

lightweight bikes only appeal to youngish and strong pedallers to whom the bike's weight can make a difference. Not a big number. £300 e-bike: totally possible but commercially suicidal for anyone to try. It's a sad fact that people who buy extremely low cost bikes are predominantly poor and use...

Are lightweight, short range e-bikes the answer

even if a £300 bike is possible (the woosh Angel sold for £299 including delivery and it's a hefty piece), vendors aren't interested in making them - too little money in it to make it worth their while. The real battle for vendors is the £999 bike and £1599 bike.

    Odd ku65 and BPM2

BPM on KU65 @ 48V: that's perfectly good. The motor won't fry. You may attract attention because it will be seriously fast.

don't you like pancakes? The good thing about CD motors is the sprag clutch. Its low friction makes unassisted pedalling so appealingly natural.

    Good for electric bicycles!

the BBC should have looked into e-bikes as potentially safer bikes. Motor assistance helps with control, e-bikes tend to have better tyres, brakes, lights etc.

Changes to Regulations - Speed pedelecs / dongles / throttles

if e-mopeds are legal, there could be the kind of motorbike taxis where the paying customers sits pillions behind the rider. I've seen them in Asia. That'll beat the congested London traffic.
