    Up hill struggle

You don't really need that many gears with a motor. As long as you have a tall enough top gear and a suitable low gear, which doesn't have to be anything like as low as with the bike unpowered. The motor will fill in the gaps. With most 9 and 10 speed triples there are a lot of duplicates...

    How dangerous is cycling?

Context is all. How many pedestrians walking about compared to cyclists?

    Up hill struggle

I think the steepest hill in the UK has a sign that claims 40% but no one believes it. It also says it's not suitable for traffic. There are a couple in the Lake District that are 30% for short sections. 40% is 1 in 2.5 so around 21 degrees. Hard to walk up. In practise hills start getting...

    Up hill struggle

Trex probably had it right. No hill is 40% it's impossible. It's probably more like 20% or under. That is a very steep hill and there aren't many that steep.

Changes to Regulations - Speed pedelecs / dongles / throttles

I would imagine so. I certainly hope so. My bike cuts out at 17.3 mph and so do many other German bikes.

Changes to Regulations - Speed pedelecs / dongles / throttles

I know from writing to ministers on other issues in the past that template letters are given less weight and seen as organised lobbying. Letters and emails written in your own words are much more likely to be considered. Just a few lines in support is all that's needed.

    forum is collapsing

I don't recall any huge bust ups in the last few months. There may be differences of opinion about legal and illegal bikes here but no ones been hounded off the forum as far as I can see.

Changes to Regulations - Speed pedelecs / dongles / throttles

They seem to be seeking consultation. Is this a formality I wonder? I thought they were going to finally ratify the changes this year not consult on them.

Cycling - you've never been so likely to survive.....

How do the fatality numbers relate to the numbers cycling in each decade though? At their peak in the thirties the number of cyclists was huge compared to now.

Presta or Schrader valves on KTM

Schrader valves can take high pressure without any problems. I had Prestas on all my road bikes and ran them at 90 psi. But I had a MB a few years ago fitted with road tyres and Schrader valves and ran that at the recommended tyre maximum of 85 psi. It was almost as fast as my old road bikes...

    The EU, In or Out.

Latest polls don't bear that out. Over 50% wanted to stay in. Way higher than a five years ago when over 40% would have voted for out and only about 35% for in. If a referendum was held the voter always moves toward the status quo toward the end when the possible consequences of change become...

    Estimating Battery Power Used

The best way to make it last is to charge it every trip and not allow it to discharge too low too often. My understanding is that two charges from half charged to full is also a cycle.

    Cube town hybrid suitable?

I would do some research and get a feel for what's available at what price level. Then go and ride a couple if it's possible. Trex has made a good suggestion. But if you want to spend a bit more for better quality Kalkhoff make very good reliable commuter bikes with long ranges. 50 Cycles has a...

    Estimating Battery Power Used

You need to know the amps of the charger, then multiply that figure by the time taken to charge. That will give the Ah used. Multiply that by the battery voltage, say 36 typically and that's the whs used. You can then divide that by the miles ridden to find the wh/per mile figure if you want.

Bosch motor sprocket (2014) worn out ?

I've always changed chains when they showed wear on my road bikes, and if caught in time the rest of the drivetrain will outlast several chains. Everyone else I knew did the same. Just letting the whole thing wear out together doesn't appeal to me. Chains are a lot cheaper than the rest of the...

    Newbie from Cornwall

The problem with all these helmet mirrors and wrist attachment ones is that they don't give a consistent arc of view. You have to be able to trust what you see, your life may depend on it; and there are some situations where there's just no time for the 'lifesaver' glance over the shoulder.

    Newbie from Cornwall

Not sure what you mean about not having open handlebar ends. If you don't have a bung in there and have closed grips you just cut out the centre with a sharp knife. Or all the mirrors on the market the Mirrycle one has perhaps the best reviews. It's stable and robust and as good as most...

    Police crackdown on illegal e-bikes

They sound as if they would be good places to cycle on even with an s pedelec. Very unlike most of our cycleways which are designed for very slow shopper bikes, and mix walkers, dogs and children together. Those are my memories of them anyway but there aren't any where I live now. I used to...

    Police crackdown on illegal e-bikes

Actually I did know that and was pointing out to earwig that his desire to have a 20+mph bike to use on cycleways could be a bit dangerous. As you no doubt know s pedelecs in Germany have other restrictions which make them legally more like mopeds than pushbikes.
