When your speed goes to zero when coasting, it's because you have P2 set to zero instead of 1. There's no need to buy a new controller.

One wire to white, the other to 5v. If that doesn't work, the second wire goes to ground. Don't forget that you need to set the number of pulses in the settings (P07) to 1. If it's zero, the controller will probably use a motor hall instead.

Chuck the whole thing. It's hideous. All you need is two wires that connect to the controller. You can use any 36v battery you want and fit it wherever and however you want. The controller is in the compartment in the front of the battery. Pull it all out and stick it in one of those toolbags...

What if they didn't do it right. Never make assumptions. Measure and test to be sure.

It sound like you haven't set the speed sensor parameter, so it's using a motor hall sensor for the speed signal, i.e. you have P2=0 when it should be P2 =1 or 6, depending on the number of magnets in the motor.

It can't work without magnets. Look again!

We need a lot more details. Show some photos of the handlebars and other parts so we can see what electrics it has. Please describe the circumstances under which the one goes by itself. If it's when you push it, it's because your freewheel needs oiling.
