E bike general discussion and recommendations

When you have a crank motor you have to be in the right gear all the time. it's completely different to a hub-motor. From what you're saying, a crank motor would be a bad choice. Woosh, Wisper and Juicy would be good choices. Any cheap Chinese bike would be the easiest to get spares for in the...

    Pendleton Somerby Battery Problems

It depends what cells you choose. You can have long life, high capacity, low cost, high discharge rate, etc. A like for like replacement would probably be about £200. You need to ring them up and discuss the options.

Help! Error 07 On DCP18 Bafang Rear hub motor

You weren't supposed to short the battery. Remove the battery and short the connections on the battery receiver - the receiver is the thing that the battery clips into. If you don't have a receiver, short whatever connection you have on the bike, not the battery.

    Yosepower hub kits.

The display shows the power. With P3=1, you should get around 60w on level 1, which is not enough power to give you anything other than a docile start. Tell us what power it shows when you get your harsh starts.

Help! Error 07 On DCP18 Bafang Rear hub motor

Try this: Disconnect the battery. Short the two pins that it connects to in order to discharge the capacitors in the controller. Wait a minute just to be sure, then reconnect the battery. The battery needs to be around 48v or maybe a bit less when you reconnect it. you might get a spark when...

    Buying advice

Hub-motor for commuting and light trail use Crank motor for proper off-road stuff. The more your usage is bent towards commuting, the stronger the argument for a hub-motor. For hub-motor bikes, stick with long-established brands, like Wisper, Juicy, Oxygen or similar.

What determines and assists hill climbing capacity?

You don't need high power, high volts or high current to climb steep hills. You need torque, which you can get with relatively low power. I converted a Bromtom with a tiny Q85 motor and a 14 amp controller at 36v. It could drag an all-up weight of 110kg up my 14% test hill without pedalling...

P3=1 will solve that and make you realise why the KT is so good.

    Izip mountain trials power problems

That's a lot clearer explanation. From memory, those batteries are an extremely tight fit in the case. You have to have the terminals at opposite ends to get them in the case and the wires have to take exactly the right routes. It took me about two minutes to solder new batteries in, then about...

    Izip mountain trials power problems

You've wired it wrong. You've gone from the black of the left battery to the black of the right battery, but it should go to the red of the right battery. You should have the black of one and the red of the other going to the terminals and the other red and black joined to each other. I'm...

Help! Battery to controller connection issues

OK, all looks good. Flat steel forks are perfect. Solder the battery wires. Connect just the throttle, control panel, battery and motor first for testing, then add the PAS and brakes. Did you get the manual for the LCD? If not, it's here...

Help! How do I remove rear wheel gears

If you can't get at the screws, you have no choice but to remove the freewheel (gears) for which you need a freewheel removal tool with a big hole in it to clear the axle. Note that most don't have a big enough hole. The DNP one does and so does one of the Park tools, but I don't know the...

Next stage would be to open the case and show us how the batteries are wired. Maybe you put one the wrong way round.

    how hot is too hot?!

Warm is OK. Hot isn't. As I said in the other thread, it's not speed that makes the motor hot, but inefficiency. Inefficiency comes when you pedal too slowly. With your new gearing, your motor shouldn't get hot at a steady 20 mph. It more likely got hot when you were going slower.. If the bike...

    TSDZ2 speed restrictions

Remember high cadence keeps it cool. You didn't change the gearing of the lower gears, so it should be OK when climbing. My worry about a bigger chainwheel was that it would raise bottom gear and make hill-climbing harder. If in the end you can't pedal fast enough going up steep hills when fully...

    Oxygen E-Mate Drive Train Failure

OK, that's quite unusual. something is messing up the controller. it could be a fault in the controller or in the motor cable. The motor cable is a little tricky to repair, but can be done. Without another motor to try, I would take a gamble on the controller, though my suspicion is that it's...
