    Winter DIY - Heated grips

I bought a heated jacket from Ebay when my central heating wasn't working. The heating lasted about 2 to 3 hours from a USB power pack that I made out of recycled ebike battery cells. It was surprisingly warm, but that was in a very cold house with no wind. The jacket is basically this set sewn...

Bike great for 6 months now LCD claims no charge on charged battery, motor doesn’t work

You must measure the battery voltage before and after you switch the LCD on or bridge the red and the blue wires.

    Lifespan of ownership

Good question. I went through about 20 bikes in my first few years, while I tried out every type of bike, motor and concept until I found my ebiking nirvana, which I've now kept for six and a half years. I still keep trying a few new concepts and technologies, but I've found nothing that can...

    3000 trouble free miles

I think most people would remember twice, so I think we can say 3, 4, or 5. Lets take the middle one, which would equate to one every 750 miles. For somebody doing 15 miles each way to work (150 miles a week), that would be a a new chain a cassette every 5 weeks. If I'm honest, that's not quite...

Hmmmm! To lose count, there must have been a lot. Can you estimate?

    3000 trouble free miles

Exactly how many chains and cassettes, please? An idea of their cost would also help establish the cost of long-term ownership.

A little extra help for an aging commuter...

You can paste as large a wall of text as you like. You're only digging yourself deeper into your hole. Let's go back to start. OP wants a motor to go 400rpm without much torque. You told him that he can get that by changing the wheel size in his controller. That's completely wrong. Nothing...

How to get the best from your battery

It's not an absolute condition. It's a case of the longer the worse, but the badness is very small. If you leave it on for 24 hrs, it might do .01% damage. Over the years of too-long charging every time, it might reduce the life of your battery by 10%. It really is nothing to worry about, but...

    Bosch question

Bosch changed their software to detect the speed sensor hack. It worked on the first version, but not since. There is some time involved in the detection, so if you do it and test it, it'll work for a bit, but then you get the error code logged and it won't work until you change it back.

A little extra help for an aging commuter...

Forget about trawling the internet and confusing yourself all the time. You only have to ask us. The controller knows the wheel size when it's programmed into it, otherwise it doesn't, and it doesn't care too much about it either. It always has a speed signal from the motor halls. You can change...

Hub or Mid Drive? Any views?

There have been a few that have done it quite successfully, Bionx for example. There have even been some cheap Chinese ones.

18650 charger and also case recommends pls

Just a warning. Your lights are more likely to damage the cells than the charger. If your that worried about them, fit a voltmeter. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DC-3-5-30V-Waterproof-Digital-RGB-LED-Voltmeter-Volt-Meter-Panel-Mount-0-56/311673557559?hash=item4891311237:m:mFi6wdaHjH0eK67_2eIaqMg

How to get the best from your battery

It's nothing to panic about, but you shouldn't leave it on for too long. Not many types of charger actually switch off. Most hold the voltage at maximum (42v for a 36v battery), which is not good for the battery if it stays like that for too long. Also, there are all sorts of safety concerns.

    Ebco ebikes.

Call me a cynic if you want, but here's how I see that motor. TransX developed it at great expense. They sold it to a few of their friendly customers. It wasn't very popular, so they had to discount the bikes that had it to get rid of them. They replace it with the M17 motor quite quickly, which...

Hub or Mid Drive? Any views?

The type of sensing has no relation to the type of motor. Cadence sensing is probably used in preference to torque sensing because it's cheaper, more reliable and easier to maintain.

A little extra help for an aging commuter...

All the wheel size setting does is make the speed calculation approximately right, so that you get the right speed displayed in the LCD. That calculated speed is used to determine the cut-off point in some controllers, others get it independently, so it doesn't affect it. That's the cut-off for...
