Ah ha! After Eddie and his similar altitude gain to my train run Phill only does 40 miles! <nefarious laughter> I am on a winning streak! :D
45 miles is my common distance but only because I have had a small battery until now!
My vengeance will be without mercy! I will climb higher and ride...
We have mutual insurance companies where the insured are the company owners - every year they nag at me to participate in the governing board elections... I could even present myself to be elected to the board.
Of course they want to make money but much of the profit is invested in socially...
These motors have been in use in cars (think vibration, temperature, humidity) for many years so reliability is not an issue. They (as an e-bike motor) have a very good reputation in Germany. They are expensive because made in Europe.
No I don't buy batteries from China, I prefer paying more and having a European consumer protection guarantee.
Other stuff yes and if it is under 100€ there is no import duty in France.
I get very strange looks when I say that I mounted the kit myself and that top speed is limited to 25 km/h. Everyone assumes that because you mount a kit yourself it is going to be a 45 km/h flame breathing monster...
Phill revolutionary idea - don't take out insurance! Your baggage will be insured if it is lost/stolen. Risk it, be optimistic. If something bad happens dump the luggage and get on the first flight home.
Life is too short so live it while you both can.
To be complete, my controller (common Chinese) has modes for start up assist in the advanced parameter settings where a throttle only works if you are pedalling i.e. PAS has detected it. Then the throttle gives 100% power up to the legal cut off speed of 6 km/h (in reality defined by the user so...
But with a start up assist "button" you must be pedalling for it to work. The German law is the clearest on this with start up assist to 6 km/h for pedelecs and 20 km/h for s-pedelecs. Walk along mode gives 6 km/h without pedalling but as it only provides about 40 W (in my case) the bike won't...
And they cost more, what a surprise!
I would say that 14 speed 500+% range is the sweet spot. Rohloff does it in a hub, ideal with a mid-drive and you can do it all by yourself with a 2 x 7 derailleur and a hub motor.
