you want a motor with a gearbox in it?

It could have been worse, grooved pedalshaft and cotter pins. :) .

A random thread for things too unimportant for their own thread...

Just like China used to be and still is in the backwoods regions. Their trouble is that government couldn't make up its mind on which side driving should be on and changed it a couple of times. As you say, it does largely work though, and why we are trying similar with uncontrolled zones in...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

I knew that one of course, but it's from long ago and the French secretly wish they'd never bothered. What's certain is they won't be doing it again, while we never seem to learn. Not just two aircraft carriers, one which will never be used, but a succession of Albion class assault ships which...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

Agreed, I should have worded it to differentiate more clearly. Like you I also resent the way the government has reneged on our previously agreed pension conditions. Who to complain to? No-one or nowhere in this country that's for certain. We have access to the European courts for just one...

And not just pensions Tom, it's true of all benefits, those elsewhere in Europe treated very much better. Of course they don't buy aircraft carriers and nuclear missile submarines, or steal private pensions and stash them in tax havens. .

She was more right than our government who think there is a British nationality when there isn't. England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland are nations, so their peoples have those nationalities. Britain, Great Britain and the UK are federations of countries. If there truly was a British...

    Brexit, for once some facts.

We won't have to look far to find it, but I fear we'll take a long time doing it. The silver lining will be eventually rejoining the EU. .

Use it or lose it.. an interesting read.

Perhaps not as bad as our confusion over octopus. The root of that is Greek so the plural cannot be octopi and we use octopuses, believing that more correct. Still technically wrong though, the Greek plural form is octopodes. .

Change UK law to allow 30mph ebikes

My thoughts: Traffic and safety perceptions number one. Effort required number two. "Image" number three. Weather number four, though this will figure more highly among car drivers. .

Ouch indeed, this is going to hurt. As I've posted previously, I'm quite sure an eventual outcome of Brexit, no matter how soft or hard, will be the departure of the motor manufacturers to the EU. They won't entertain a continuous additional cost on every car to produce it in the UK. There...

But Thatcher had the immense benefit of North Sea oil and gas during all the peak years of production. I'd say her benefit was far greater than the post war damaged colonial one that Attlee had. .

Change UK law to allow 30mph ebikes

The Danes always quote Copenhagen since that's the bright spot for cycling. The rest of the country is nowhere near as successful, hence my optimistic 50% overall, probably a large overestimate. The Dutch model is best overall, but in hilly car-loving Britain it wouldn't be remotely as...

Change UK law to allow 30mph ebikes

Judging by the cycling promotional videos it's always sunny there. Seriously though, 30% of the Dutch and 50% of the Danes don't cycle and do still like driving. .

Change UK law to allow 30mph ebikes

As d8veh has posted twice, making driving unpleasant will push drivers into considering e-bikes or unpowered cycling. It's important not to lose sight of the alternatives though, since in the UK we will never get to 50% cycling and here's why. The Netherlands has huge advantages in being...

I'm not quite that old, but I have seen evolution in action. When I was young fish didn't have fingers, but now they are so common that we wean our kids on them. .

I was forced to smile at the triangle on the front suggestion. It reminded me of the man carrying a red flag walking in front of motor cars early in the 20th century. ;) .
