Yes, and a bad-boy slogan to go with it, how about: "We throttle" .

Has anyone sought single vehicle approval and insurance, for a 250-1000w 15.5mph ebike?

The snag I see is that getting the Vehicle Inspectorate to type approve a pedelec to have an independent acting throttle means they are certifying it as a motor vehicle, since they will only be able to type approve to L1e-A at a minimum. That is a motor vehicle class. The same applies for a...

    benelli bikes

Yes, I remember those well and agree their designs including the current 1200cc three cylinder engines often looked like rip-offs by someone. I'd hesitate to say that Benelli were doing the ripping off though, they have a very long technical history and made some very advanced designs pre-WW2...

    Kalkhoff Error Codes

Earlier Kalkhoffs with the Panasonic units did have error codes which were detailed in their manuals, but an online link to those is now dead. Later manuals for the Bosch and Impulse powered bikes don't have anything about error codes in them. As Neal says, best contact 50cycles about this for...

    benelli bikes

It is in Benelli's motorcycling world of rip-roaring three cylinder 1200 cc motorbikes! For e-bikes maybe not, but considering how many rebels in this forum ride e-bikes which are illegal in at least one way and often two, who knows? Infamy might be right up their street. It seems Benelli are...

Much better, thanks, but a pity you weren't around years ago when I dropped that clanger. :) .

    Lithium Battery Woes

No worry, these slips are so easy to make. I still remember my embarrassment after absent mindedly typing that nickel was an environmental hazard when I meant to type cadmium! There were many posts correcting me! :( .

News: A-Bike Electric launches on Kickstarter

We'll have to wait a long time, the A bike was announced in 2004 when designer Alex was a Royal College of Art student, 11 years ago. These days in maturity he runs his own design company and lives near me in Coulsdon. I've never seen an A-bike in the flesh so I doubt if these Sinclair...

Has anyone sought single vehicle approval and insurance, for a 250-1000w 15.5mph ebike?

Yes, I've noted that previously, but my thoughts are that any two wheeled vehicle that requires a rider to balance it is never going to be accepted as a vehicle suitable for the "physically handicapped". Insulting phrase as you rightly say, it does seem to imply a sufficient level of disability...

Has anyone sought single vehicle approval and insurance, for a 250-1000w 15.5mph ebike?

James Brown's reply to Shemozzle99 contained this: Although ‘Twist and Go’ cycles will require Type Approval according to the dates in EU 168/2013 the decision has been taken that cycles that have ‘Twist and Go’ capabilities up to 15.5 mph will not be considered as motor vehicles and therefore...

Has anyone sought single vehicle approval and insurance, for a 250-1000w 15.5mph ebike?

2002/24/EC is wholly incorpporated in 168/2013, so I'm no longer referring to it separately. It was 2002/24/EC that resulted in the 200 watt / 250 watt confusion in the UK, due to it conflicting with the UK's EAPC legislation. I'm as upset as you are about the vagueness of the correct...

Has anyone sought single vehicle approval and insurance, for a 250-1000w 15.5mph ebike?

Throttle is permitted by L1e-A. As you note, the wording differs greatly from the pedelec one, but more importantly, the DfT's IVS has ruled that a throttle equipped pedelec has to be type approved to L1e-A. That inherently states throttle is permitted. There is also precedent in the S class...

News: A-Bike Electric launches on Kickstarter

Not a salubrious one though. The A bike was designed by a young and impecunious Alex Kalogroulis. Sinclair liked the look of it and offered Alex a job, thereby enabling Sir Clive to claim the design as his. Alex however is acknowledged as the chief designer in an otherwise nonsensical...

Has anyone sought single vehicle approval and insurance, for a 250-1000w 15.5mph ebike?

Since this law affects EU wide sales, I think they will but maybe not soon. It will probably depend on pressure from this end. .

    benelli bikes

They are from the Italian Benelli motorcycle company, but I'm not surprised at them being made in China like so makes of e-bike and bicycle. Here's a sales blurb from one of the agents selling them: "Welcome to the brand new range of electric bicycles by Benelli, the infamous Italian motorbike...

These won't apply any more from January 2016 with the new pan EU L1e-A class though, speed limit is 25 kph as for pedelecs, no horn needed and cycle trailers permitted. .

Has anyone sought single vehicle approval and insurance, for a 250-1000w 15.5mph ebike?

We are all a bit lost at the moment Jonathan, the DfT when I've tried asking for more information will only answer in terms of the current law and seem either very unprepared on the changes or unwilling to engage about them. There's been no announcement about parliamentary bills on the subject...

    Lithium Battery Woes

Basically they use cheap and easily available sodium salts in a heated environment and run at around 240 to 350 degrees C in the later designs. This means they are best suited in applications with regular daily use, rather than intermittent, since maintaining their temperature during standby...

Has anyone sought single vehicle approval and insurance, for a 250-1000w 15.5mph ebike?

Still in the air at the moment I'm afraid, the DfT are not forthcoming with any information yet. L1e-A replaces the low powered moped and L1e-B replaces the 45kph moped class and these are pan EU regulations. All I've seen is the draft type approval regulation some while ago, but it holds...
