    Does bicycle weight really matter?

This also affects personal weight versus bike weight. Extra bike weight is far worse than extra personal weight for anyone in the normal body weight range. The reason is quite simply that one's muscles automatically adjust to one's weight. This is due to the fact that living with a body weight...

Has anyone sought single vehicle approval and insurance, for a 250-1000w 15.5mph ebike?

That was from the provisional intentions for type approval of L1e-A and L1e-B mopeds. If you read the second paragraph of that post you'll see that I said it was from the Draft Regulation, which of course may change. Since then there have been changes regarding driving licence and insurance...

    Let's keep the throttle!

L1e-A isn't in yet, but we've always had this class, it's called the Low Powered Moped Class, same 15.6 mph assist limit but 1000 watts and throttles allowed. SVA testing for that has long been available and costs £55. But the standards for that are higher so any standard e-bike isn't good...

Thanks Rob, I hadn't looked deeply into the article. Maybe the one Andy saw though. .

Will the end of full speed throttles in January 2016 cause a rush to buy.

An extract from this document: Department for Transport Information Sheet Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles (EAPCs) in Great Britain – revised June 2015 Power assistance - "Twist and Go" "Because of the particular benefits for elderly and disabled users, pedal cycles providing electrical...

Sad News...80 year old pedelecer killed.

For years London has been running at around 15 cyclist deaths a year and as high as over 20 in some years. This year by June 22nd, 8 cyclists had been killed, six of them females on the nearside of trucks in the danger zone. I and very many others were kicking up a fuss about this everywhere...

Sad News...80 year old pedelecer killed.

The saddle is twisted hard over to the right and there's mud across the road behind the bus. Just beyond the police car there's more mud on the approach side of the road and what looks like tearing of the grass verge. My guess from those is that with hearing the bus coming up behind just after...

Replacement Smart eBike batteries by BionX,

Tom, Eddie and I were friends and continued communications very long after he was barred from the forum. In fact I even posted news and information on his behalf a number of times, stating I was doing that each time. But I can assure you that what KudosDave has said is true. There were...

Battery Voltage of ebike and EN15194 Standard

NRG no longer visits this forum, but the answer is that it definitely is the nominal battery voltage, not any actual fully charged figure. This follows the same practice as the 250 watt motor rating in EN15194, that too being nominal with all e-bike motors exceeding it in various ways. .

range seems to be decreasing a lot

Capacity diminishes throughout their life causing the voltage drop slope to start earlier, so the hinge points at which the LEDs switch become earlier. This doesn't necessarily mean your battery is dud, only that it's ageing, and at 20 months that's to be expected. Not too long ago a two year...

    Smart ebike out of production?

The only thing that can make sense is that when separate, the battery terminals are somewhat exposed and could be shortly accidentally. When mounted in equipment such as an e-bike, the terminals are concealed and connected to an isolating switch. .

Will the end of full speed throttles in January 2016 cause a rush to buy.

As an i.c. vehicle since petrol is the energy input*, no. *The inverter would be effectively be the transmission, not the motive unit. .

Will the end of full speed throttles in January 2016 cause a rush to buy.

I doubt it, there are catch-all laws in many areas and this could well be a case. For example, there's absolutely no mention in law about hoverboards or a whole host of other odd vehicle types, but they are all made illegal by the catch-all type-approval law. If those don't mention something...

Road Charges- Pay as you drive

    Spring thing on carrier

Dates from when most cyclists were utility riders, using their bikes for transport including commuting. That spring loaded frame was to hold one's rolled up cape when it was out of use, that being the universal rainwear for most of cycling's previous history. It's still cycling's best rainwear. .

    Vive la France!

Very true, and not just for the immigration issue. The driver problem is us though, all thinking a train can be steered when it patently cannot be. To get steering back we need to get off the train and regain control, which means scrapping our failed democratic model. .
