Chinese Whispers or the thoughts of Chairman Ching

Many other products are partially or almost entirely dependent on China. However, there's been an increasing trend to manufacturing in other Far Eastern countries and in India, so ultimately China could be an even greater loser. Once Japan was the dominant world supplier of a wide variety of...

    Commute realistic?

Not if you have an effective mirror! It was this restriction with a hood long ago which introduced me to having a bike mirror, and ever since I won't ride without one. No other road users need to twist their head round, simply because they have mirrors. .

    Commute realistic?

This Google link has loads of capes, many with integral hoods, something not included on the capes of yesteryear when many wore sou'westers. They are still available too! .

    Nicad battery replacemnet

That would be Ben at Kinetics then I'd guess. NiMh cells have many similarities to NiCad and are exactly the same 1.2 volts per cell and the same cell dimensions, whether D or C cells. They can have around double the capacity of NiCad. Unfortunately the quality of NiMh large cells is often...

    Commute realistic?

I'm equally sure fashion is the villain, as so often these days. That doesn't worry me, nor d8veh apparently, since he is also a strong advocate of capes. I daresay bike shops are also involved, since the sale of fancy cycling gear is so much more profitable than a cape sale. .

    Commute realistic?

From at least two of us in here you will get a strong recommendation that a traditional cycle cape is the best defence against wet weather when cycling. A good one sits over the handlebars and hangs well down there, keeping the legs dry, and the traditional yellow colour over a large expanse is...

    Woosh - more dreadful service

I'm not confident about that yet Trex. These trends have been apparent previously in the industry, but have often reversed. There was such a developing consensus in the period from 1999 when Giant, Yamaha, Aprilia, Panasonic, BikeTec Flyer and some other e-bike makers all settled on crank...

    Woosh - more dreadful service

In all respects, the products included. Although many have greatly improved in the last six or so years, the obvious sign of an immature product is still the lack of agreement on e-bike designs and layout of the kind we see in the motor industry. A bit like many decades ago when popular cars...

    Kalkhoff Agattu peculiarity ...

I think that will do the trick. The trouble is that the unit is mounted into a painted frame, so over time with the pedal forces imposed the units starts to shift inside the mountings as the paint gets compressed, Reseating it and retightening should be all that's needed. The bolts really do...

Do You Wear Full Face Helmet?

Steve, I started cycling 68 years ago long before there was such a thing as a cycle helmet. I've never worn one and never will. I haven't had any such accidents, ever. At 78 years I've outlived most of my family. Being a cyclist has helped to keep me fit and I've cost the NHS hardly...

    Kalkhoff Agattu peculiarity ...

Yes, the three mounting bolts of the unit are the most likely source of the problem, they need to be very tight. .

An offer too good to refuse?

That I don't know Tillson. Their original NiMh battery was similarly expensive, but the reason for that was that they uniquely at that time had them made in Germany to very high standards when Germany was a very expensive place to buy from. That changed when the German factory burnt to the...

An offer too good to refuse?

It may have eased a bit, the 36 volt 9.6 Ah is on sale in the USA for $750, down about 25% on what it was. So the UK price for it that was £1050 may now be lower. Even if down to circa £750 that's still horribly expensive for a smallish capacity battery. .

3 maybe 4 to choose from, experiences and thoughts ?

Why dither, buy all five. Then you'll never be wondering if you made the right choice. First ebike: Best thing, made tougher runs and trailer pulling easier. Worst thing, made me lose fitness for unpowered cycling. .

An offer too good to refuse?

£2099 in some dealerships, so at £250 off it looks good. End of year models now of course so this is the time when bargains commence. Will an even better bargain crop up shortly, who knows? As with all buying, we could wait for ever for possibilities and never buy anything. .

    Bike for long fastish commute

I agree with Arstu, there's not a truly legal way of meeting this need acceptably. Whether to match the existing times with much less effort or reducing the times with a smaller reduction in effort, assistance will be needed well beyond the usually quoted legal 15 mph. However, there is some...

    Comedy fall

It seems the 11 speed Alfine is rather prone to false neutrals from the reports. The 8 speed version hasn't been at all bad in this respect so perhaps the fundamental design has been pushed too far. .
