Thank you. That may be a solution. Not as neat, but it should last longer. Bike is less than 3 years old. I think part of the problem is that the rack was shifting from side to side, covered up by paniers so not obvious.

That could be because the Dutch ride them everyday on roads and probably do five to ten times greater mileage than UK riders. They expect their bikes to last years. The kind of bikes favoured on this forum seem to be more for sport than transport, and probably have a limited life.
