Good to see Brompton where on the BBC 10 O'clock news tonight, an example of a small British company doing very well in these economic times. Sales and especially exports are up, well done.

Yes, it was good to see, also in the 1 pm and 6 pm BBC 1 news.

They just go from strength to strength, recessions don't dent them and the competition never manages to equal their product.

If only our car companies had been like that.

Yep - I've had one on order under the Cycle to Work scheme for a month now and haven't even gotten a delivery date as yet but I'm not expecting it till July/August and secondhand hand prices are so strong I reckon I could e-Bay the bike the day I receive it and make a profit! (not that I would dream of doing that, but it's great to see a British designed and built product doing so well).

We have two Bromptons in the family and I use mine every day for a mixed mode commute. I see various other folders on the train and none come close to the Brompton for useability. I suppose someone will come out with a real competitor at some point but they certainly seem to making heavy weather of it.

Although I do applaud the evolutionary development strategy I would dearly love to see an all new Brompton incorporating everything they have learnt along the years. I imagine that they must be thinking, at least, of electrification. After all, as little as 5 miles range would satisfy about 95% of Brompton users.

I agree a factory fitted motorised option would be good and would probably sell like hot cakes if it was done well :)

That said I am not sure if it would fit the very British ethos of the company, given that the British attitude to electric bikes is not good.

Brompton book

"Brompton Bicycle", by David Henshaw, offers a great retrospective on how the brand, design and production process evolved since the project inception. There's also good insight on folding bikes in general. Top book :)
