Did his battery have a fuse, or a fuse between the battery and the controller?
I don't think so. The BMS should have shut off when over-current. Maybe it saved him. He said that he had accidentally left the battery switched on as well, so that was three errors that combined to cause the fire. I must admit that I keep forgetting to switch off my batteries. Effectively, it's switched off by the controller, but if a MOSFET fails, the power goes straight into the motor. The switch in the battery is just another MOSFET. When the battery is switched off, there are two MOSFETs in series blocking the power from going into the motor instead of one.

Because the BBS** controllers are prone to failure and they come with daft settings that are locked by the CANbus comms. Also, the standard controller is attached to the side of the motor in just about the worst position in terms of weathering and damage if any water gets in. Remember the guy, who's bike spontaneously caught fire because his controller leaked? The water shorted a MOSFET, which let the full battery current into one of the motor coils and melted his battery wires. Luckily, he was nearby and heard it crackling, so was aple to rip off the battery before it went off.

Talking about faffing about: You'd really rather rip out the motor and all it's accessories and do a complete reinstallation with A TSDZ motor than run a single cable from a Hailong controller to the motor? I know out of the two what sounds the most daft.

Anyway, it's daft to have such a motor in the first place, when a hub-motor is so much better. Both Guerney and Soundwave have crank-motors - say no more! QED
All hypothetical, and not relevant to me, both my bbs01b motors are both ultra reliable and customisable, and once I purchase a uart controller as a spare then that'll serve me well if they fail. And if the spare eventually fails, and I get fed up with DIY or tinkering I'll probably just go to the dark side and buy a Cube eMTB with a Bosch motor and big battery and pay the man if it ever fails

Soldering two 25A blade fuses inline between my battery and controller wouldn't take too long, because just one sometimes isn't enough - Mr.Grin said they can fail. I'll get around to it.

Never!!!! I'm not Boschist - I bought a Bosch circular saw the other day, doesn't look CAN bussed. Cut depth of 150mm. To make a truing stand if need be, because tenon saws are too much effort and jigsaws jiggle about.

It's all just opinions. Like arseholes, everyone's got one
Not everyone - just the lucky ones. Some people never had one:

and some people that had one, lost it:
