I took the train today, a 45 minute wait on the station platform. First train through for Bristol. Second train through.... for Bristol. Third train through (you know where this is going - don't you)....... for Cardiff - which also stops at....... BRISTOL!

Got to work an hour late but safe and sound. Spotted that two people had ridden their bikes in. Chuck with his knobbly tyred Rock Hopper and Woo-woo (yep, that is a nickname) with his cobbled together weird thing concocted from bikes from the tip.

He came in to see me later.

"See you didn't ride your bike in today." he says.
"Yeah, that's 'cause I'm not an idiot. Not that I'm saying you're an idiot mind." replies I. (Bear in mind there's a long cycleway that is completly ungritted and not heavily travelled).

He looks at me and says "Well, I only came off the once!"

I'm thinking 'once is once too many for me'. At my age I could clock a broken bone a little too easily for my liking (which isn't).

Anyway, my comment to Woo-woo is no reflection on the good peeps here who rode their bikes today.

I think if I could have gone road all the way it would have been ok, but too much of it is off-highway and lightly travelled and not gritted. Dancing on Ice (with a bicycle).

Vikki.

PS, love that picture, CarpetBagger. Clever.

I'm home and fed now. :)
I was a bit delayed as I went shopping on the way home, good as it let my feet warm up a bit. It was a bit slow but only half hour extra riding and good fun. I'm leaving about 5am tomorrow and the forecast is for -4, it may not be so much fun - main roads only then!
Strange sensations whilst riding with lots of slides that I'm amazed I recovered from and it's great riding past cars stuck on the hill with wheels spinning.

Hats off to you!! That's dedication (well, that or insanity :D ).
My Wisper is currently broke, so can't use that at the mo (lucky escape I thought ;) ), unfortunately the car died too the day before yesterday - also being fixed.
Ho - hum, nothing for it but to use the motorbike (this is Cornwall, we don't have public transport, even in good weather). Weather man says apart from it being cold there's just a chance of a 'light snow shower' this afternoon, so I reckon it's no problem. Welllll, it turns out the WM is a lying b*****d and following the heavy and settled snow storm I have to ride my bike up and down a series of ungritted, unused, and heavily snowed upon single lane 1:6 (and more) 'undulations.'
It was an 'interesting' trip  , which I shall definitely NOT be repeating tomorrow. Trying the equivalent of ice speedway on a BMW 1100, with road tyres, well I got home - eventually, without dumping it either (which was frankly astonishing under the circumstances). I definitely think the Wisper would have been preferable if available. Otherwise, I think I'll ski next time.......

Mussels - the legend.

Sounds like a fun trip home Phil! I got caught out once at the gym by a freak snow storm - cars couldn't get up the incline out of the gym car park but luckily my Aprilia Falco handled it - just!

I managed the ride to and from Bath Spa Uni without any issues other than a build up of snow on my chest, roads were all fine (but wet) - thank god I live in Bristol (first time I ever thanked him for that!). No idea what tomorrow will bring but it all adds to the 'fun'! :D

Vikki, how the heck did woo-woo come to get that nickname? The mind boggles!

carpetbagger,
I work for a company which designs and builds dozer blades. We could probably put one together for you to suit your bike and with a matching paint job. Would only cost you a few thousand quid....I would suggest a little wheel at each corner of the blade, similar to stabilizers. :D

-2 and loads of ice out there this morning, I could harldy walk without slipping over. Thankfully it was a good surface for the ice studs and again I was very suprised at the grip they gave me, the only real problems were the ruts that dictated the wheels direction but I guess that's payback for not spending £50 more on the Marathon Winters. I chose back roads deliberately as they would still be covered in ice, the thought of getting slush sprayed up my legs on the main road didn't appeal.
I was gutted when I found Greenwich park closed, lazy sods probably thought there wouldn't be anyone wanting the frozen cycle path at 6am. When I came up through it last night the going was fun, coming up the main hill there were a load of 3' to 4' snowballs in the middle of the road and I had to carefully pick my way round them trying not to stop and lose momentum. On the flat part I could do my Tie fighter impression again riding down a dark track with my head torch lighing up all the snowflakes coming at me, coupled with occasional giant snowballs coming into view it was all a bit arcade game like. Going down the clear road at the side of the park was probably the much safer option but if I wanted that I would have taken the train. After Greenwich the roads were all clear so the fun was over.
Of course when the weather is really cold all the showers break down, I tried the gym and 3 other buildings this morning and I couldn't find a working boiler.

It's snowing again, snow over ice will stop the studs getting a grip. Again coming home could be an interesting ride.
Now I'm starting to understand why Eskimos have so many words to describe snow.

We think we have it bad? Remember Professor Otto in Norway on a typical summers day!

Took the train again today. Saw lots of people with bikes - walking them :D
That has me worried, maybe bikes need walking, I hope I'm not going to get a visit from the RSPCB for not regularly walking my bike.

Well I tried.. I really did. I don't have to commute, and I've been laid up in bed for a couple of days with a tummy bug, but today I felt well enough to tackle the snow and head to Sainsburys.

I made it all the way from the back garden to the living room window, but no further. No matter what I tried, I just ended up spinning my wheels. I admit defeat. Compared to Mussles, I'm pretty pathetic aren't I :)

Out Of The Mouth Of Babes . . .

In a cafe at lunchtime; and on the ubiquitous background radio, the announcer told of which local schools had sent pupils home due to no heating because the SCHOOL BOILER HAD BROKEN DOWN. The presenter of the radio show then asked a brilliant question:
"Why is it, whenever there is a severe cold snap or severe snow, school boilers are the very first thing to breakdown?"

Hee hee! Couldn't agree more - that's all I've ever heard my entire life. Forewarned is forearmed - so remember, if ever you are offered an ex-school boiler going cheap on eBay - ignore it - you know they only work satisfactorily in the summer time.
:)

STEVE WRIGHT IN THE AFTERNOON (BBC RADIO 2)

Wright: Johnny Weissmuller died on this day. Which jungle-swinging character clad only in a loin cloth did he play?

Contestant: Jesus.
- HA Ha-eey!!!! 'My' question has just been asked on the BBC's digital news channel a few moments ago!

Was having a late lunch so decided to watch the snow news on TV at the same time. The newsreader had a link to the leader of the national teachers association/union, (a Mr. Harrison), the very FIRST question the newsreader asked him was: WHY AT THE VERY FIRST SIGN OF SNOW DO SO MANY SCHOOLS HAVE TO CLOSE DOWN?

(P.S. All schools closed in Surrey, 450 in Hampshire and so forth; thousands nationally).

What? Eh? You just never know who's reading your posts do you?

Anyway, he replied about advance warnings etc., to allow parents time to plan ahead and so forth.

WRO-ONG!

Flecc's post had the right answer -
- because the school caretakers bugger the heating boilers up to grab some peace and quiet! Hee hee hee :)

Every school caretakers dearest wish is the school empty of kids, so any excuse will do, one might say. :D

Well, it's looking good for being back on Bikey tomorrow morning. No snow around, it all thawed and dried during the day. Unless there's another little flutter during the night. I've missed riding Bikey.

Two days on the train and you really appreciate your ebike.

Whenever you get fed up with your journey try public transport for a day or two. You'll go home and give your favourite ebike a big cuddle and a nice bowl of warm oil.
