4.5kg is a bit heavier than most mid-drive motors, even allowing for derailleur weight.

But huge issue is trying to cover 480% gear range with only 8 speeds. Evenly spaced ratios would need 25% per step, way too much for almost all situations. For comparison, Rolhoff is 530% range over 14 speeds with even 13% steps, and my 11-51 11 speed cassette has average steps of 16.6%. Road cassettes have much closer ratios.

Nice idea, but not quite right.
Surely 8 gears is more than enough for a bike with motor assist, especially if you are limited to 15.5 mph.

All the slight gradients where you would need to change gears on a normal bike you can just stay in top gear with the motor assist ?

The target market is premium mid-drive bikes, including top end MTB. I suspect it will be torque sensor because I think it is trying to compete and beat top end Bosch and Shimano.

If 8 speeds were enough in those markets we would see 8 speed cassette based bikes there already.

My particular gripe in my touring niche would be that easy riding on long days works best over a narrow range of cadence, which is best matched to wind, gradient and tiredness by rather closer ratios.

It seems a bit lazy on a premium product to me: assuming a two stage reduction, 8 speeds is 2 x 4. I'd have wanted to go the extra mile and use 2 x 5 or 3 x 4 for 10 or 12 speeds.

The fundamental flaw with the whole e-assisted bicycle concept.

Yes, 8 gears is enough for the motor to assist, in fact far too many to cover the 5 to 15.5 mph range given the torque and power flexibility of e-drive. Just 3 would be plenty for the motor over that limited speed range.

But 8 is nowhere near enough gears to suit all rider's optimal cadence requirements in all circumstances. After all, we are not limited to 15.5 mph, only the assistance is. Rider variations need to cope with at least 3 to 30 mph at cadences between 40 and 90.

Why no pics of the Irish haul?
Have these geniuses got no cameras?
Where will they be auctioning off these bikes?
I might put in a bid! Hehe :p
