Hello all,

Remember my experiment a year ago:
http://www.pedelecs.co.uk/forum/threads/how-long-will-it-stay-intact.18093/#post-223743

I've parked my cheap bike outside and wanted to check how long before it'll get stolen. I've been gradually putting more and more expensive bikes outside as experiment was successful.

And to date I've parked my main bike outside:

It is locked with a chain lock and a python lock.

It has been out for a month on my previous place and 1 month on my new place...

And this morning I've noticed someone nicked my python lock... after 1 month. But he didn't touch anything else, which is strange...

My chain seems intact:

So it seems that 1 month outside is about the time before damage starts to occur on a more expensive bike....

However, I have no idea why he stole my python lock, now I have to buy another one because it's the main way I secure the battery to my bike. I felt few time, this python lock was really useful to keep everything in place!

Why would anyone steal a lock? Maybe I didn't attach it correctly?

cwah I always love your posts, they make me smile.

I have no idea why someone would steal your lock. Even if you did not lock it properly why would they want it with no key ?

I actually think it's maybe a warning from neighbour to tell me that my bike is blocking the sidewalk?

Or maybe these kids who are fascinated by my bike and keep asking me how much it worth and if I want to sell it for them :/

My theory is they wanted to have a look in the bag, took off the lock had no idea what that is in the bag and just chucked the lock.

no I always take the battery with me. It is never parked outside. It's the single most expensive item of the bike, I wouldn't keep my battery overnight, I've already had my battery nicked once... and I parked it only for a couple of hour outside!

I think that someone took your lock, because they had the know how, to do it, not a thief, but someone trying to prove a point & be clever.

Perhaps it was someone just practising on breaking into bike locks? which bike they steal as a result is more worrying. (Or maybe someone disturbed them after they got the python lock off and they didn't have time to get the other lock off too?)
