What a pleasant surprise. Has old Jezza had a bang on the head?!

He makes some very good, surprisingly valid, points, but I'm not sure if I agree with people only cycling as a political statement comment

Good article though, well worth a read

Well, I would like to see Copenhagen style planning laws in this country, so I could not understand why many of the posters on that site were criticising him.

Jeremy has always said cyclists should stick to parks etc, so this apparent conversion is just another vote for segregation. He doesn't care where cyclist go, hell if necessary, so long as it's not on the roads.

I would like to see Copenhagen style planning laws in this country,
Denmark has almost exactly half the population to area density of Britain, and far more of their country is suited to road and path space due to the lower altitude profiles.

In those circumstances it's very easy to make adequate provision for cyclists. To even attempt something half as good we'd have to start by bulldozing our cities flat and begin again due to our lack of space.

I live and work in London, and i agree that it would be ideal to segregate cyclists and other traffic. If i commute to work by car, generally its ignorant car drivers that annoy me and the odd cyclist. If I'm on my motorbike its generally scooters that cut you up and drive like w@nkers because your moving at the same pace as them through traffic you notice it a lot more. If I'm cycling, its pedestrians, other cyclists, and cars not seeing me or just ignoring me thats the problem. It really does vary but i guess the point I'm making (if any) is that (in London anyway) people act differently to each other in all situations, so your bound to get wound up by each other whether its a cyclist with a car or a motorcycle with a scooter.

All that said it'll never happen so patients go a long way!!

I don't know what is like in other parts of the UK, but here in Swansea, outside the city centre (and even occaisionally inside), lots of people ride on the pavements, no-one seems bothered.
I suspect that the main reason is that most people drive cars and frankly would prefer to see bikes on the pavements so when they are walking and meet a bike, they think nothing of it.
