Hi everyone,

Im still mulling over what I should do for battery box for my 24 v ping.

I notice lot of people make there own but Im looking for something simpler just now , so I can basically protect the battery in something resonbaly small.

As Im housebound just now I cant really get out to look at any toolboxes in stores that would fit the dimensions of my ping i.e. without it being too large , too small or with those stupid compartments for nails that i keep seeing on the advertised ones online.

Given that - I was thinking I could probably just use something like a canvas camera bag ( lowepro might be fine if i got it slightly bigger ) and used some of that polyethylene foam inside with bungee cords / straps.

As it happens I already have some I bought last year ( foam )which worked very well in terms of absorbing shock , and seems like it would be easy to cut / craft with the right tools - like dremel perhaps ?

With the foam youd have more protection than any metal or plastic case and the advantage of far less weight / waterproof , but what im not so sure about, is if theyd be any other drawbacks in terms of it overheating ,that I'm be unaware of .

What do other folk here think ?

cheers

As Frank says there are suppliers of ABS boxes that would work well, plenty of others have used bags of various types and that seems to work well. Water proofing might be a problem though.

You can use one of those bag things for puuting football boots in. You can get them from car boot sales for about £1 if you're lucky, otherwise from sports shops for a bit more. Here's Steve's (San Eagle). He glued his existing connectors to it. It actually contains two 10aH batteries.

Here's another idea, which is very easy to make a nice battery box. Buy some of this aluminium angle from Wickes:
Aluminium Angle - Beading - Interior Timber Mouldings -Building Materials - Wickes
some of this Corex (flat corrugated plastic sheet) from your local craft shop:
Correx Corrugated Plastic
Cut out rectangles to make a box shape. Cut the aluminium to the correct length to cover all the edges, Use silicone sealant or bath sealant to glue everything together (two sides at a time). This will give you a nice neat, strong, waterproof box for about £5 - or less. I used this method on a larger scale to make my trailer. You can make a removable lid by not gluing the aluminium around the top.

Interesting approach. Correx is easy to find stuck to poles outside people's houses. A bit of flat black paint will cover up the estate agent logos. An old camping mat can be used as a source of thin foam padding for the inside.

The other approach is one or two pieces of 5-10mm plywood for the main structure with 2mm plywood for the big faces, pinned or with some screws.

Keep looking for suitable containers. One possible approach is CD cases as a CD jewel case is quite close to the same size as typical battery pouches.

I have been looking ALL OVER for a case the right size for my LiFePo4 battery packs and have had very limited success. They are either ridiculously expensive at the size I need, or too small or too big. I did find the perfect size and design housing on Aliexpress really cheap and was delighted, but the Chinese seller didn't complete the order and was unresponsive..

I'm currently exploring a couple of options from a supplier in UK if I can remember the website I will report back..
