Two words.

Bitterly Disappointed.

You can't fault Frank Curran's customer service, he's a great bloke, but the product just doesn't stand up.

My bike has been through three controllers, two throttles and has a badly scuffed battery due to it t leaping off of the frame at the slightest hint of a rut in the road.

In August I was having problems with the Powabyke taking off without warning. Turn on the controller and the front wheel would whizz away without even a touch on the throttle. I (as well as my local powabyke dealer) was convinced that once again a control box had failed, however Powabyke believed that the throttle had become magnetised and needing replacing. Powabyke sent out a new throttle unit under warranty. The dealer fitted the throttle under protest, but lo and behold it appeared to have worked. I rode home that night with a bike that behaved exactly as it should.

Now, I should add, that I'd become so sick and tired of things going wrong with the bike that I'd decided to purchase Aldby's Ezee Torq2 as it was going for a hell of a good price. So, the Friday I rode the X6 home from the dealer was the last time I'd ridden it, until today. Today I finally had some spare time to get the X6 out of the shed and give it a spruce up prior to trying to sell it. I gave it a clean, degreased the chain, and once everything was spick and span decided to take it for a quick spin. I've been carefully charging the battery every 3 weeks or so to try and maintain it, so had no worries there.

Took the bike up the road, got to the junction, closed the throttle, lovely. Opened the throttle again just to get a bit of traction, closed it again and carried on going. Rode it up and down the road and sure enough the old problem is still there. Close the throttle the power stays on. That's totally and utterly unsafe!

Somehow the throttle has become mysteriously 'magnetised' again. It's out of warranty now and is pretty much unsellable unless I spend god only knows how much on getting it fixed. I have an £800.00 lump of crap taking up space in my shed.

Bitterly disappointed.

That's tough...........One of the perils of being an early adopter of a new product I guess.

Dont worry about the 12 months warranty, you are protected under the sales of goods act and whatever you purchase must be "fit for purpose" for 6 years. As this bike has probably got inherent manufacturing defects you can claim a repair. contact "consumer direct" and they will email you a standard letter and give you a case number and support with your issues.

It's put me right off Eddie. I can tell you that. Losing £800.00 is not good at any time.

Thanks for the advice though, I'm definitely going to look into that.

I would just buy a new throttle if that's all that's wrong with it. Everyone seems to use "Wuxing" throttles and I've not had any problems with the unit I've been using. You may need to change the connections on the plug, but it should be quite straightforward.

They're not so expensive, so worth a try to see if that resolves the issue. If Powabyke had a bad batch of throttles or just used a particularly bad model, then that's probably the best thing, rather than going through the aggravation and headache of getting a free replacement, for it to just fail again.

I agree it's not so good that something that is so important as a throttle fails, but at least you have the brake which will cut the power immediately and if you remove the throttle it will still function on the pedal assist AFAIK.

The brakes are just normal Vee's There are no micro switches so the power doesn't cut out. The pedal assist function is throttle dependant as well. I've not heard of Wuxing but may well check them out. Cheers.

Wuxing is a bit of a generic name meaning 'Five Stars'* so there is more than one company with that name. The Wuxing throttle has lasted well on my Wisper but not all throttles work the same way so you need to know exactly what your bike uses.

* That came from someone here but I can't remember who.

Rad and I were looking at the X6 at the same time and I'm sorry it didn't work out as it did look good in the original brochure, but I was put off by them changing the design of the battery. In the end, I dug into deeper pockets via the cyclework scheme and got a Proconnect (which apart from the chain falling off a few times, touchwood, has been flawless)

Hopefully you can get some kind of refund

might have been me.

The Wuxing company for the bike components is here. (this is a link below to the English site but as the original URL is in Chinese you might get a bunch of odd characters on screen).

That said I think they only sell in large quantity to other businesses, but it might be of interest for those trying to identify components. But even the "traffic light" throttle has about 3 diffferent kinds if not more...

Frank, thank you for that. It's appreciated. I have no axe to grind with you as I thought I'd made plain in my original post. I am however extremely gutted about what's happened with the bike. Do you think it's the throttle or the box?

Somehow the throttle has become mysteriously 'magnetised' again.

Thats just plain stupid, almost every Ebike throttle works by passing a current through a magnetic field, changing the magnetic field by opening the throttle or closing it changes the amount of voltage sent to the controller. if the throttle was not magnetised it would not work.

I may be wrong but I thought it was requirement on Ebikes to have a throttle cut off on the brakes.

Not quite, the requirement is that the power must default to off. The throttle has to be held open to keep the motor going so the motor shuts off automatically if the rider lets go. If that wasn't the case then some other form of cut off such as brake switches would be needed.

That was a bit malicious. Frank is a good guy and would go out of his way to help.
Or am I missing something?

Yes, I'm sure he was just being amusing and in truth appreciative of Frank's excellent service, just showing it in this way. See the wink!
